A man has been charged with damaging ULEZ cameras

The Met Police says it is dealing with a further 96 reports of damaged cameras

It comes amid opposition to the clean-air scheme expansion set to take effect in August in London

The expansion will mean drivers in all London boroughs must have low-emission vehicles or pay a daily charge

A man accused of damaging ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ) CCTV cameras is facing criminal charges.

The man, 42, has been charged with criminal damage and destruction of or damage to property.

The Met Police said, overall, 96 allegations of criminal damage had been passed to the force by Transport for London (TfL).

Police have launched an operation to tackle the ongoing damage to cameras.

It comes amid opposition to the clean-air scheme expansion set to take effect in August.

Det Supt Daniel Smith, whose officers are leading the investigation, said: “We have been proactively targeting those we suspect of causing or seeking to cause damage.

“We are carrying out a thorough investigation and this includes gathering CCTV, speaking to potential witnesses and following up active leads.

“We are also working with TfL to prevent further offences in the future.”

Anyone with information that could assist police is asked to call 101 or tweet @MetCC and quote CAD 4279/10MAY.

Obviously you have not read the Motorist Highway Code.
It clearly states Motorists have a RIGHT to drive where they like, whenever they like, as fast as they like.

A man has been charged with criminal damage after Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) CCTV cameras were damaged in London.

It follows 96 allegations of criminal damage, which were made to Metropolitan Police by Transport for London (TfL).

A 42-year-old man has been charged with criminal damage and destruction of the cameras.

Detective Superintendent Daniel Smith, whose officers are leading the investigation, said: "We have been proactively targeting those we suspect of causing or seeking to cause damage.

"We are carrying out a thorough investigation and this includes gathering CCTV, speaking to potential witnesses and following up active leads," he said.

"We are also working with TfL to prevent further offences in the future."

In a bid to tackle the capital's pollution, the zone was expanded to the North and South Circular Roads in October 2021. It now covers around four million people - roughly 44% of London's population.

Any car entering the ULEZ that does not meet minimum emission standards must pay a daily levy of £12.50.

A City Hall report found the move led to a drastic reduction in harmful air pollution.

Toxic nitrogen dioxide concentrations are estimated to be 46% lower in central London and 21% lower in inner London than they would have been without the ULEZ.

But the expansion has been met with opposition from those concerned about how the charges will impact drivers and businesses.

A DSI leading an investigation into criminal damage??

You can tell that ULEZ is a promotion-enhancing political phenomenon.

But I’m glad to see that crime in London is at such a low ebb that a senior management rank can afford to spend precious resources on such minor
    matters.

Several newly installed ULEZ cameras in Bromley have been vandalised in opposition to the Mayor of London’s expansion plans.

Around 2,570 automatic number plate recognition cameras are being placed across London ahead of the expansion on August 29.

Anyone who drives a vehicle in London that does not meet emission standards will have to pay £12.50 a day to drive.

Pictures posted on social media seem to show wires on the ULEZ cameras in Masons Hill left slashed.

A spokesperson for Transport for London said that vandalism on its network is “unacceptable.”

It added that all incidents will be reported to the police for an investigation.

More images have surfaced on social media showing ULEZ cameras in Knee Hill, Abbey Wood, also left damaged.

At the time on March 29, a spokesperson for Mayor of London said that it is “deeply disappointing” to see opposition to the policy.

They added that this “petty” vandalism of London’s “essential” transport infrastructure is completely “unacceptable”.

There are currently more than 300 cameras that have already been installed across outer London boroughs.

Five councils have won the first stage of a legal challenge over Sadiq Khan’s expansion plans.

Bexley, Bromley, Harrow, Hillingdon – along with Surrey County Council teamed up to fight the mayor’s plans.

It was announced that the case will be going to High Court on two grounds – the failure to follow statutory procedures and failure of consultation over the scrappage scheme.

It is reported that the case is set to be heard in July.

We have contacted the Mayor of London’s office for a comment regarding the damaged cameras in Bromley.

It very clearly isn't the only thing that's unacceptable, though - is it?

Was it the slightest bit unexpected that London residents would be
opposed to paying £87.50 a week each in extra road tax?

Or does he just mean that opposition to Khan is not allowed?

A Harrow councillor is outraged after Transport for London (TfL) used a “loophole” to install ULEZ cameras in Harrow after the council refused to give consent.

Harrow is one of the five councils that have launched a judicial review over plans to extend the £12.50 charge to include outer London boroughs.

But TfL has started putting up cameras in Pinner, with four having now been installed on traffic lights on Pinner Green, at the junction of Uxbridge Road, Pinner Hill Road and Elm Park Road.

Cllr Matthew Goodwin-Freeman has called the decision to move ahead with this “utterly disgraceful” and claims “the overwhelming majority” of residents oppose the plan to expand the zone.

He said: “Harrow Council refused to give consent for TfL or the Mayor to install ULEZ cameras on our infrastructure.

"They have found a loophole and are installing it on TfL infrastructure such as traffic lights.”

He added: “My inbox has been inundated with residents, businesses and charities anxious about the impact the ULEZ expansion will have on them.

"What we are seeing is a rogue Mayor, spending Londoners’ money on a scheme that will have negligible impact on air quality when the [money] could be spent electrifying TfL bus fleets, cleaning up the London Underground or running bus/tube services
    properly.”

Alongside Harrow, London council’s Bexley, Bromley, and Hillingdon, as well as Surrey County Council have brought legal action following plans to expand the ULEZ into outer London from August.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan says the expansion will reduce emissions and improve air quality in the capital. The council is waiting to hear whether the case will proceed to a hearing.

A spokesperson for Harrow Council said: “In the absence of a court order preventing the installation, the Mayor would have to consider the use of his powers and any process to be followed in advance of such use.

“The council is considering its options, but the installation of cameras does not prevent the judicial review challenge on the legality of the scheme itself.”

A TfL spokesperson said: “We are working closely and collaboratively with the local authorities concerned to install the infrastructure needed. Where cameras and signs have been installed, all the correct permitting processes have been followed.”

A spokesperson for the Mayor of London, said: “Around 4,000 Londoners die prematurely every year due to air pollution – with approximately 118 premature deaths in Harrow alone.

"The Mayor is determined to protect the lives of Londoners who are growing up with stunted lungs and more at risk of heart disease, cancer and dementia due to our toxic air.

“The Mayor continues to urge the councils involved in the Judicial Review to abandon this costly and unnecessary legal challenge and instead focus on the health of those they represent.

A number of Ultra Low Emissions Zone enforcement cameras have been stolen in London after protests against the expansion of the scheme.

London’s Evening Standard newspaper reports Transport for London had already seen dozens of numberplate-reading cameras vandalised or covered up by people opposed to Mayor Sadiq Khan’s widening of the clean air zone to the Greater London boundary.

It says protesters have climbed traffic signals to remove the cameras, which will be used to identify drivers of non-compliant vehicles, leading to a £180 fine if they fail to pay the £12.50 daily ULEZ levy.

It is thought opponents are using a Facebook group to share locations of the cameras, which TfL has refused to make public. The Standard says more than 50 cameras are believed to have been damaged or removed.

“But this coalition will not flex to his will and questions the lawfulness of this installation by stealth of his cameras, which has understandably caused huge upset to residents who are relying on us to protect them from the financial devastation the
ULEZ expansion would cause for so many families and businesses.”

It has been reported that a number of the new enforcement cameras have been vandalised by “anti Ulez” protestors.

Sadiq Khan told the Evening Standard: “Vandalising Ulez cameras, vandalising TfL property, is not acceptable. It’s a criminal offence, and not unreasonably the police and TfL take it very seriously.”

He added: “We have asked for the court case to be decided sooner rather than later.”
