An investigation has revealed suspicious communications devices
inside Chinese-made cargo cranes used widely at US ports,
supporting fears that the equipment could be part of an
    espionage plot.

Cranes made by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries (ZPMC), a
state-owned Chinese company, in some cases carry cellular
modems, according to a congressional investigation reported
by the Wall Street Journal on Thursday.

The modems offer a potential backdoor for remote access,
and do not appear to support the normal operations of the
    equipment, the investigation found.

The discovery of the modems, which had not been previously
disclosed, supports growing fears in US intelligence circles
that Chinese cranes could be used to covertly monitor US ports,
    or even sabotage their operations.

Chinese firms make nearly 80 percent of the cranes used
in US ports, after years of undercutting domestic suppliers
    on price.

    . . .

You'd never think about a crane - but they CAN see
everything being moved, and to where.

It is not revealed if the devices can lock-up the
    cranes or cause dangerous malfunctions.

Now the maker will claim the secret comms module
is there for "safety/maint" reasons ...

Um ... do our allies ALSO use China-Made cargo cranes ?

I think a LOT of equipment needs to be checked-through
VERY thoroughly - not JUST cranes either - at ports
    and maybe airports.

This is only the beginning as it's only going to escalate.

Monitoring major In/Out points IS clever and can
likely provide a lot of usable intelligence. Note
that MILITARY supplies also go by ship. Spy on
that and you know who/what/where/when. Similar spy
ops in Europe/Taiwan/etc will show the
who/what/where/when of who receives said goods and
downstream spying can further narrow down the particulars.

I'm reminded of the "Great Seal" bugging debacle
at the US embassy in Moscow. A completely passive
device UNTIL you beamed microwaves of a certain
frequency into it. Took 'em a long time to find.

NEVER underestimate the opposition. They all have
their own "Q's" and WILL find very sneaky way to
do intel. These cranes are way down the chain, but
they handle SO much stuff, as good as human spies.
Might even report the weight of the containers.
A container might SAY "rice" or whatever but if
the weight is way off then you know something
sneaky is happening and bring in more spies.

BTW, a *huge* surge in Chinese 'immigrants' at
the southern border of late. There are a LOT
of Chinese - op for LOTS of spies/operatives/
    saboteurs.

Odd note ... I've discovered that the "Great Seal"
bug was invented by the man who also invented the
"Theremin" - the e-music device that creates all
those spacey sci-fi sounds for the movies and Led Zep
    music.

It works with two radio transmitters - one with
the capacitance bit attached to an external
antenna. Moving most anything near that antenna
causes a difference in the frequencies between
the two oscillators ... and the result is the
very weird sounds. Just tech stuff for the
    geeks here.

That inventor was Leon Theremin, a Russian.

Sometime after, the Russian govt basically arrested
him and ordered him to invent a "perfect" bugging
device. With that level of threat, he did exactly
that - perhaps the most successful, consequential,
    bugging device ever.

The "Great Seal" bug was concealed inside a wooden
frame built IN Russia. The device was a microwave
antenna attached to a very basic mechanical
modulator. By itself it did nothing. However if
you beamed exactly the right microwave frequency
at it, it became a live microphone. This was all
during the very height of the Cold War. Brilliant.

I've heard that part of the theme for the original
Brit "Dr. Who" involved a Theremin - which both
intrigued, and creeped-out, a lot of the kiddies.

Leon Theremin was no fan of Stalin/"communism", but
they basically put a gun to his head. The bug device
does kind of cement his rep as a genius however.
