It is time for a final troll:

GG supported Usenet poorly at best. Their pulling the plug is a tacit admission of incompetence.

Usenet support lasted for a very long time for a GoogleToy that cost The Evil Empire money but generated no revenue. Most GoogleToysget scrapped after a short time.
Leaving T.O. because of that is an equally
    poor excuse.

I have long said that using a free account and a free newsreader is far superior to using GG.

You may be right. I have no comparison. I used GG for 25+ years and never had a problem. I'll fade out when it does.

Just curious... Why are you opposed to using a news service
and a newsreader, both of which are available free?

The problem I see is that the chances to attract anyone new to a Usenet group,
after GG stops supporting them, are minimal. We've already seen most of the discussions moving elsewhere, to blogs, Facebook etc And as a result discussions
here now often feel stale, saying the same things to the same people over and over
again. So even if most of the remaining regulars moved (back to) newsreaders, that
    would just postpone the inevitable

Not opposed. Just looking for an excuse to break the TO habit. The death of GG is as good as any. The (admittedly small) activation energy barrier of installing and learning about a real news server will keep me from going back.

Fair enough. You've been a valuable participant here; enjoy

Yep. The 100-200 post days, with many of the posts being

Postponing the inevitable is what medical care is all about, but that's
not a reason to reject it.

For a certain value of "all", I'd say - we have just right now (another)
debate about the contours of assisted dying in Scotland and
the role of the medical profession in it. At some point
pulling the plug is the right decision.
