the last message I see on eternal September is from this morning - on
google groups there are many more after that, so this is just to see if
I can post from my newsreader

for a given value of working... It seems it does not load any messages
from the "a riposte of fine tuning" thread. When I refresh, there seems
to be a split second when the icon changes to "new messages" but then
quickly changes its mind and says no new messages on the server. weird

That's indeed strange. You mention Eternal-September, but your
headers indicate your post is from aioe, a different Usenet server.
Did you switch servers, perhaps accidentally? If so, switching back
to one or the other might clear this up for you.

For me, it's always satisfying to identify a cause to a problem, even
when I'm the cause. Problems that fix themselves also tend to break themselves.
