Stockton Mayor Michael Tubbs, a Democratic Party rising star, is
trailing his Republican challenger after the first night of
counting.
Tubbs, 30, trailed Kevin Lincoln by nearly 1,700 votes with tens
of thousands still expected to be tallied. It works out to a
51.7-48.3 advantage for Lincoln at the moment.
Lincoln is a GOP businessman and a military veteran who had not
run for office before. Tubbs projected confidence on Wednesday
morning, suggesting he would eventually pull ahead.
"Progress comes at a price. Change is hard. Fret not. Stay calm.
And let all the votes be counted," Tubbs tweeted.
Based on the last registration report posted in February by the
San Joaquin County elections office, Democrats had more than a 2-
to-1 registration advantage over Republicans in Stockton with
more than 124,000 voters at the time.
Still, Tubbs' early deficit caught the attention of California
Democrats who could suddenly envision losing one of their most
promising young stars from office.
Four years ago, Tubbs became America's youngest elected mayor of
a larger city when he won at the age of 26. Tubbs, a Stanford
University graduate, was endorsed by Oprah Winfrey.
While in office, he has attracted national attention for
piloting a universal basic income program in which residents get
cash payments from the government in Stockton, which has
struggled with economic and budgetary challenges.
That pioneering role has raised Tubbs' profile. Other big-city
California leaders like Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and
Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf have since backed a guaranteed
income, a policy that was also the centerpiece of Democrat
Andrew Yang's presidential campaign.
