MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — An evacuation order has abruptly forced
out residents of a 14-story oceanfront building on the same
avenue where a condominium collapse killed nearly 100 people
last year.
A structural engineering report prompted the evacuation of
the 164-unit structure, which is in the process of undergoing
a required recertification. An engineer discovered that a
main support beam identified for repair 10 months ago had
shifted and that a crack in the beam had expanded, and
other structural supports may need repair as well, the
report said.
“There’s cracks in the column, cracks in the base, I mean
in the garage, in the two storage garages, there’s cracks
in the beams, everywhere,” Marsh Markaj, a building resident
who said he works in construction and noticed the problems,
told WPLG.
. . .
Rather a LOT of those big beach condos were built about
the same time, in the same way. Inspectors got their
plain brown envelopes, politicians got theirs ...
"Build 'em FAST AND CHEAP" was the mantra.
Heh ... they were talking about "comprehensive shoring"
of the main supports - but SCREW THAT ! The structure
is crumbling everywhere, a thousand little, growing,
cracks full of salt mist. One day soon, JUST like the
one down the street. Tick, tick, tick ........
My old man was in the Trades back in the day, helped
build a number of those things up and down the east
coast. Said he'd NEVER live in one - he'd seen all
the shortcuts, all the mistakes plastered-over ....

Ok ... really, Really, REALLY hate to say it, but also
"very capitalist" .....
Those condos were THE THING from the late 70s to early 80s.
Builders saw HUGE PROFITS in slamming them up quick, pols
saw HUGE PROPERTY TAX REVENUES. All manner of SHIT was
built and any/all issues dutifully COVERED UP. "The Future",
well ... that's not anytime SOON, is it ?
Oh, and there were also certain other kinds of facilities
built to the same "standards" - things you really, Really,
REALLY wouldn't want to be built like that - if you get
my meaning. Nuf said.
My old man had a military/industrial background after WW2
and helped build those kinds of places where even if they
pack 'em with TNT they don't fall down cleanly. He became
rather disaffected from the mid 70s on with the pure SHIT
he was told to help build.
There are HUNDREDS of those beach condos of roughly the
same generation/design. We're talking maybe BILLIONS
of dollars of real-estate MINIMUM. Face the horrible
horrible truth - they're ALL gonna have to be torn down
soon. The LAWSUITS from the residents are gonna break
several industries. "You Sold Me WHAT ???!!!"
Alas the pols from those days are either dead or senile
so you can't take it out on them.
Clue, beachfront condos ... FIRST you drive DEEP, BIG,
pilings.
Second you use STAINLESS STEEL REBAR for the
first few stories at least.
Third you bring in OUT OF
STATE INSPECTORS. Yep, a lot more expensive - but they
won't kill all the residents later on.
Hmm ... "stories" ... interesting, romantic, word here.
Each floor is assumed to be a "story", a community,
a world unto itself .....
