Federal investigators determining why a South Florida condominium
tower partially collapsed three years ago, killing 98 people,
said Thursday there were many faulty support columns in the
tenant garage that ran below it and the adjoining pool deck.
National Institute of Standards and Technology investigators
told an advisory panel that tests show that some of the steel-
reinforced concrete columns at Champlain Towers South were half
the strength they should have been and were not up to construction
standards in 1980 when the 12-story tower was built. The steel
in some had become moderately to extremely corroded, weakening
them further.
. . .
So ... they were crap when they were put IN - yet
mysteriously passed all inspections - and after
the salt air got to work they were WORSE than crap
yet STILL managed to pass inspections.
Ya know ... somebody needs to stick an extra-large
microscope up the "inspection" trades ASS.
I do remember seeing some photos taken by the tenants
of columns where the concrete was all spalled off and
lethally-rusting steel exposed. Management just had
someone plaster-over that ... all fixed.
Now esp in the 70s/80s the mantra was "Build 'em
QUICK and CHEAP". Local pols were completely down
with that because lots of big beach condos meant
prestige and TAX REVENUES. The east coast from
about SC down and around Florida slammed up these
crackerboxes en-masse. The structural design - and
sources for the components and often contractors -
were pretty much the same. Draw your own conclusions.
