Elon Musk's $80,000 Tesla Cybertrucks are RUSTING after just
two DAYS in the rain, driver claims
Owners who purchased their Cybertruck this month found the
EVs are rusting
Several images of the Tesla vehicle show small specks on
the exterior
Musk mentioned last year that owners will soon have the option
of purchasing a tungsten carbide coating that helps protect
against corrosion - but for an added unknown cost.
. . .
Truth - some kinds of "stainless steel" are more
stainless than others. The 400 series, oft used
for knives, CAN rust. There's also a problem when
different kinds of SS are used together. I've also
seen problems when the wrong welding-rods were used.
Even too much, uneven, heat used during fabrication
can make patches of the alloy "different" enough
to promote corrosion.
Series 320 SS, oft used for marine apps, is probably
the best combo for resistance and fabrication. It
is a bit more expensive though due to the high
chromium content.
Note that almost all SS is vulnerable to vibration-
induced fractures.
That Musk was pushing a hard-coat option shows that
he already KNEW they'd rust. If you live in a coastal
area where salty breezes come in, or far enough north
so they use salt on snowy roads, you're gonna have
a BIG problem quick.
And besides, it's an UGLY vehicle - sort of a
"Transfomers" version of an old El Camino ....
BTW, titanium nitride would make a more attractive,
gold-like, coating.
