Cargo ship carrying burning lithium ion batteries reaches Alaska
but is kept offshore amid frantic battle to extinguish the blaze
    as crew fears explosion

The Genius Star XI was carrying a load of lithium-ion batteries
across the Pacific Ocean, from Vietnam to San Diego when the
    cargo caught on fire

The 19-strong crew managed to make it to shore with no injuries

    . . .

Look folks ... these things DO hold a fair bit of
electricity, but they are NOT the solution for
those who crave more "electrification" They are
    NOT a safe technology.

If you are daft enough to buy an e-car, PARK IT
WELL AWAY FROM YOUR HOUSE. If you are a shipping
    company, BUY EXTRA INSURANCE.

Yea, yea ... we've been hearing about perfect+
replacement for Li-Ion for a couple of DECADES
now ... but they never appear. The batts are lab
projects, maybe a square millimeter. Can't be
scaled-up for real-world needs. Batteries are
a real pain in the ass. Pound for pound hydro-
carbons pack a LOT more energy, and the safety
    issues can be managed.

And forget hydrogen for vehicles ... a whole
other set of issues there - price & safety.
Hydrogen MIGHT make a good mix for INDUSTRIAL
apps though ... an amazing amount of energy
    just goes into warming-up stuff.

SOMEDAY better batts ... but not anytime soon.

It has happened with ships full of cars with batteries:

    https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/one-dead-cargo-ship-fire-electric-car-suspected-source-dutch-coastguard-2023-07-26/

Unlike ICE vehicles, EV's have charged batteries where all the energy
needed is self contained. In the case gasoline it must become mixed
with air and catch fire to be a problem.

If forced to own an EV, I would never park in my attached garage or even
    charge it there.

A son said he saw the extensively damaged leg of a client that was
caused by the battery in his cell phone igniting. Just imagine this
happening in a car with a battery.
