    Wasn't Jimmy Carter's stagflation his downfall ?!

"StagFlation" was gonna happen anyway. The real
problem was Carter's "fix" for it - big wage/price
freezes and such which totally trashed any self-
    corrections The Marketplace could offer.

Was watching something on CSPAN the other day, the
Calvin Coolidge Society or something. Good commentary.
    Kinda covered the Wilson/Coolidge/Hoover era.

It was noted that Hoover is generally blamed for the
Great Depression. That's only indirectly true. There
WAS gonna be a recession, stocks and a lot of other
things were over-priced, over-leveraged, and all
bought on credit (sound familiar ?). A market dip,
was inevitable. Alas Hoover went nuts with federal
"fixes" to try and prevent it - thus making it
    LOTS worse.

In short, it's not that Hoover "did nothing" as
detractors claim, but that he did TOO MUCH. Hey,
he'd just started his term and wanted to get
re-elected ... and a big recession would look
    BAD. He wanted a quick-fix.

Carter, also, did TOO MUCH and it turned into a
clusterfuck. USUALLY, things in the Marketplace
will fix themselves pretty quick - UNLESS some
dink tries to micro-manage it all .....

Oh, also noted in that lecture - that the span
from 1918-1929 probably represented the most
"change", social and especially tech, in the
history of the world. 12 years changed everything.

This is a lie. "Stagflation" was already occurring when Carter took office, and
there were *no* "wave/price freezes" imposed by the Carter administration.

Go back to your original universe. Carter is BEST KNOWN
(and despised) for his "Wage/Price Freeze" program - and
    the damage it did.

Wait, how come I forgot to plonk yer commie-ass posts ?
Bad as the NAZI fucks. Easily fixed.

No. That's a lie. He *had* no such program. You are making shit up.

Nixon, on the other hand, really did impose *binding* wage and price controls in
1971. But Carter never did. You are a liar.

Um, that was Nixon's solution and it failed. Carter's solution was to raise interest
rates. The prime rate reached double digits before inflation collapsed following an oil
price collapse in the mid eighties.

Calvin Coolidge Society or something. Good commentary.

Coolidge's policies were the biggest government contributor to the crash.

he'd just started his term and wanted to get

Wrong. He didn't do enough early enough. By the time the economy bottomed out, Hoover
was having trouble getting permission for relief from Congress. This is why over the
cycles of 1930 and 1932 his party lost the Congress and were sixty years getting it back.

Carter, also, did TOO MUCH and it turned into a
clusterfuck. USUALLY, things in the Marketplace
will fix themselves pretty quick - UNLESS some
dink tries to micro-manage it all .....

Carter didn't actually get anything done at all. Nixon had pooched the dollar long before
and the repeated oil shocks continued to keep the economy off balance.

High interest rates and collapsing oil prices in mid decade fixed the economy and it
boomed from then until Republican policies collapsed the economy and even the banking
    system in 2007-2009.

Modern consumerism and consumer debt as we understand them today appeared in the 1920s.
