New recordings from Mars have delivered the most accurate
measurement yet of how fast the red planet spins. The results
have left scientists puzzled as mars keeps spinning faster.
Using data gathered by the now-retired InSight lander, researchers
have discovered that Mars is spinning faster each year by about
four milliarcseconds. This might not seem like much, as it only
makes a Mars day a tiny bit shorter each Martian year, but we’re
not sure why it’s happening.
. . .
It's smallish, the core is cooling, the planet
shrinks. This transates more radial velocity,
like when the spinning ice-skaters pull in their
arms.
Not exactly a mystery.
While Mars IS more geologically active than first
assumed, this residual activity is actually kinda
proof of concept here. The core/mantle IS still
pretty hot - which means there's something TO cool.
The same thing will eventually happen to earth, once
the uranium down under is used up. Not sure if this
will happen before or after a lot of OTHER nasty
things that'll happen to Earth over the next few
billion years.
Oh, final insult, the Andromeda
galaxy IS going to collide with ours in about
four billion years. It'll totally shred both.
However the un-cool thing is the colliding
clouds of gas/dust. The whole sky will glow red.
Not good. If the sun hasn't boiled & eaten us
by then THAT will be the death blow.
So ... we've only about 3 billion years to figure
out how to flee WELL out of the vicinity. Better
get a move on, the tech is NOT gonna be easy.
MIGHT even have to migrate at sub-light speeds
if Einie was halfway right.
