Rhodes residents say wildfires spread because they cannot cut
down trees
As the island begins its recovery operation after the biggest
evacuation in Greek history, islanders are turning their anger
on authorities
. . .
Now, all in all, trees are GOOD - and not just for
tourists to look at.
However TOO many, esp in a somewhat arid heat-prone
area, can be a BIG problem. This was made horribly
clear this week in Rhodes. Nearly half the pop had
to scramble and evac, many were killed, crowds had
to wade out into the sea just to avoid being roasted.
NOT good.
I just don't think you're going to create a deciduous
forest in Greece or Rhodes. In SOME places tree cover
can help with that, create a micro-clim, but not
EVERYWHERE.
Recent super-fires in California have had similar
origins. It has been legally, or financially, impossible
to cope with trees. Overgrowth, accompanied by large
amounts of brush/twigs/FUEL, have sustained massive
fires and burn so hot the forests can't grow back.
