Six people were shot and wounded Friday night at a busy North Side
intersection that Acting Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley
described as “a quite challenging area.”
All six, an 18-year-old woman and five men between the ages of 17 and 32
were taken to area hospitals. The injuries are not thought to be life- threatening, though Worley noted Friday night that “we’re not 100% sure
because a couple of them are in surgery.”
The victims who needed surgery were out and in stable condition as of
Saturday afternoon, as are the rest of the victims who required treatment
for non-life-threatening injuries, according to police spokesperson
Freddie Talbert.
The shooting occurred at 8:47 p.m. at a bus stop in the 4600 block of
North York Road.
Worley said that a special team of roving officers was in the area
conducting a traffic stop when they heard a gun being discharged multiple
times and then saw a car speeding away.
Officers responded to the shooting scene within minutes and found three
male victims, Worley said. Within the next few hours, the woman and two
men walked into local hospitals seeking treatment for their injuries.
York Road was closed off with yellow crime scene tape for a few blocks
south of East Cold Spring Lane while police officers armed with
flashlights combed the area for clues.
At least three shootings have occurred near that same busy intersection in
the past 13 months, a trend which Worley attributed to the transient
nature of that particular stretch of York Road.
”This is a very tough intersection,” he said. “You have multiple bus stops
and a gas station. There’s just a lot of people that gather in this intersection.”
On Feb, 27, police found a man shot in the leg in the 600 block of East
Cold Spring Lane. On Nov. 17, investigators responded to a report that a 40-year-old man had been shot inside a store located in the 400 block of
East Cold Spring Lane. And on May 2, 2022, a 25-year-old man was shot
multiple times at the same intersection.
A local resident, Kane Foster, 60, said that he was in his home in the 300 block of East Cold Spring Lane watching television when he heard as many
as 20 shots ring out in rapid-fire succession.
“Everybody has a gun,” Foster said. “Everybody has an attitude. Everybody always stays mad. It’s why I very seldom go out at night.”
