    If that were the case, we would already be sunk. Since the JWST
    is at the L2 point of the Earth-Sun system, it is not accessible for
    repairs by astronauts.

    There is a tank of 'some kind of gas' that can blow off the dust that will collect on the mirrors.

    SOHO has been working for over 25 years and no one goes out there to
    polish the glass, unlike the James Webb it points towards the solar
    wind. Although various corrective optics were added to the Hubble to
    fixed the flaw they didn't wipe the mirror while there either, it's
    still limping along after 30 years.

    Hubble's optics is inside a tube, JWT is outside, exposed to the elements of space!
