Two weeks to go now! Let's have a look at some famous #14's in World Cup history!
The very obvious player to start here is Johan Cruyff, the Netherlands' all-time great, who scarcely needs any introduction. One question: would it
be fair to name him the greatest European player of all time? At least until CR7 retires, that is...
But #14 has a rather interesting history, having been in the backs of players such as Italy's Gianni Rivera (1962 and 1970) and Marco Tardelli (1978 and 1982); Argentina's Diego Simeone (1994 and 2002) and Javier Mascherano (2010
to 2018); Spain's Xabi Alonso (2006 to 2014) and France's Jean Tigana (1982
and 1986). It was also the first squad number of Croatia's Luka Modric (2006) and the last of Ferenc Puskas, then playing for Spain in 1962.
The number's top goalscorers are USSR's Valentin Ivanov (1962), Argentina's Leopoldo Luque (1978) and Mexico's Javier "Chicarito" Hernandez (2010 to 2018), with 4 goals each. And also mentionworthy is that it was Jurgen Sparwasser's number as he scored East Germany's winning goal in the iconic "Clash of the Germanies" in WC'1974 first round.
As always, feel free to comment or correct anything you see fit on the above. Tomorrow it's #13's turn.
Best regards,
Lléo
