From Real_Mardin@21:1/5 to All on Sat Jun 22 10:51:28 2024
Interesting day in Group F. A draw between Turkey and Portugal and both
teams would be reasonably confident of advancing if not just as one of
the higher ranked third place teams. Said draw and a win for either
Georgia or Czechia would see the loser of that game eliminated.

Regards Turkey and Portugal, an incentive to win the match (and
therefore likely the group) would be to avoid the winner of Group D in
the next round. Currently said team is Netherlands on goals scored, but
with France having already eliminated Poland to play in their last
match, I get the impression France will end up winning that group.

Shame on me, I didn't put [R] in the subject :(

For avoidance of doubt, there will be spoilers and results on this
    thread.

Avert your gaze if you're streaming the match at a later date or
watching on tape delay (how are things in 1998?).

    HT: Georgia 1 - Czechia 0

    A half of two handballs.

Czechia have a goal ruled out as it deflected in (accidentally) of the forward's arm.

Georgia awarded a penalty when a Czech defender accidentally handballs
in the area. We can debate the concept of "unnatural body position" all
day long but that two accidental handballs are treated differently
    doesn't seem just.

Of course, just to underline the unfairness, Mikautadze scored the
penalty to put Georgia 1-0 up.

    FT: Georgia 1 - Czechia 1

Georgia missed a golden opportunity to win the match on the last kick of
the game with a breakaway attack - but the attacker hit his shot over
    the bar.

Czechia always looked threatening when crossing the ball into the box.
For all Georgia's high tempo "pleasing to the neutrals" approach, it
would have been a travesty of justice had they won the match on that
    accidental VAR penalty.

The result means both teams live to fight another day.

58 minutes, Czechia corner produces a header which bounces off the post
and the bounces into the net off the chest of Schick, who seemed a bit
of an accidental hero. A bit of a calamity of a goal, but deserved in
the light of Georgia's unfair penalty. 1-1.

Very typical case of the jitters on that shot.

I did pick Portugal to win it all, but I have to say that along with
England, they are the biggest divers so far in the tourney. Hoping the
home field advantage works for Turkei,

I’d rather argue that they’ve been treated the same,
    they were both being penalised.

28 minutes - Samet Akaydin passes back to his keeper, he couldn't have
been properly looking where the keeper was positioned as he passed the
ball cleanly past the keeper and into his own net for one of the most embarrassing own goals you'll ever see.

42 minutes - Samet Akaydin is not having a good day. Already he's
scored an own goal, now he's just won the ball cleanly from Leao and
been booked for his trouble. The replay and ITV rules analyst confirm it shouldn't have been a foul.

The game was quite even until Silva found himself at the right place at
the right time following a deflected cross and scored, shortly after
Turkey concede one of the most calamitous own goals I've ever seen.
Portugal have looked comfortable from that point on.

The Turkish fans were chanting for Arda Guler to be brought on, but even
with his ability it's difficult to see Turkey getting back into this
    match now.

One of those matches that went wrong for one side at a reasonably early
stage and by then it was too late to recover.

This was one of the most sought after matches in the group stage, with
tickets selling for hundreds of Euros more than face value on the ticket
resale sites. Unfortunately the event didn’t live up to its billing as a spectacle.

Portugal win the group, Turkey now need a point in their final match
with the Czech Republic to qualify.

If Belgium beat Ukraine, as one would expect, we only need a draw

    no business being there.

Actually, if we get that draw, we qualify regardless of what happens in

As expected, Belgium were just too good for us.
Way too many stupid mistakes. We were actually lucky, it could have
been worse. Though I thought their goal was a bit lucky too, and it
came very early. It meant we had to chase them. We did have a few good
    chances but they had more.
In the end the difference in class was rather clear.
