    Unsophisticated Prediction Tiers Season 55 - League CHI/BRA Match Day 6 (2023/9/23-24)

Chilean league is back, Brazilian league still avoiding weekends, NWSL is off, and I'm not taking any more risks with striking South American leagues. MLS it is.

    *Away*
=- After Wednesday (or even sooner, if the home player has picked their teams) and before kickoff of the first match on Saturday 2023/9/23
    - Pick one of the teams not picked by your opponent (if they haven't picked any team, you have free choice)
=- their opponents will represent your opponent

(If the away player doesn't pick any team before his deadline, the home player will be represented by his preferred team. If nobody picks a team, teams are assigned randomly.)

That means that for Tier 2 teams these matches start before their previous matches have finished. You can't play 2 matches at the same time. It's against the rules because it's unrealistic.

Well...UPT is sort of unrealistic. But I get your point, and in fact I wanted to change the deadline of for MD6: The home team can make its pick until the end of Thursday.

Those were the teams I was thinking of picking. What's this eastern and western conference about? They're not in the same group and they're playing each other? I don't understand that.

Well rather than wait for an answer to that question, I might as well at least make a provisional pick now. I'll go for Cobresal.

It's a USAian thing, which kind of makes sense given the distances that separate the various teams. You play more matches in your broad geographic area, but also play matches against more distant teams. But, you are ranked only against the teams in your
conference. Even though, the team with the best record overall in the regular season (across the two conferences) is awarded the MLS Supporters' Shield.

Come to think of it, many other leagues have regional subleagues (when you go below the top level), but they tend to be completely segregated. But you could easily imagine teams from the Regionalliga Nord playing 75% of its matches against other Northern
teams, and the remainder against southern teams.

How do they decide which teams from the Western conference the Eastern conference teams play? Unless it's exactly the same teams, that doesn't make sense.

=- Pick one team from each of the two matches, in order of preference >>>>>>
    *Away*
=- After Wednesday (or even sooner, if the home player has picked
their teams) and before kickoff of the first match on Saturday
    2023/9/23
    - Pick one of the teams not picked by your opponent (if they
haven't picked any team, you have free choice)
=- their opponents will represent your opponent

(If the away player doesn't pick any team before his deadline, the >>>>>> home player will be represented by his preferred team. If nobody

    Ciao,
    Werner
Those were the teams I was thinking of picking. What's this eastern
and western conference about? They're not in the same group and
they're playing each other? I don't understand that.
It's a USAian thing, which kind of makes sense given the distances
that separate the various teams. You play more matches in your broad
geographic area, but also play matches against more distant teams.
But, you are ranked only against the teams in your conference. Even
though, the team with the best record overall in the regular season
(across the two conferences) is awarded the MLS Supporters' Shield.

Come to think of it, many other leagues have regional subleagues
(when you go below the top level), but they tend to be completely
segregated. But you could easily imagine teams from the Regionalliga
Nord playing 75% of its matches against other Northern teams, and the
    remainder against southern teams.
Well rather than wait for an answer to that question, I might as
well at least make a provisional pick now. I'll go for Cobresal.

How do they decide which teams from the Western conference the Eastern
conference teams play? Unless it's exactly the same teams, that
    doesn't make sense.

Varies depending on leagues.  There is a quite precise way it is done in
the NFL and NHL.  I am not sure about MLS, but I think every team still plays every other team at least once (I could be wrong)

Oops. Apparently I am a few years out of date:

"With 29 teams in 2023, each team plays two games, home and away,
against every team in its conference and one game against all but four
or five of the teams in the opposite conference. The 2020 season was the
first season in league history in which teams did not play against every
    other team in the league."

Conferences and divisions are not unique to North AMerica.  Super Rugby
had them at various stages (still do to some extent).  The United Rugby Championship has them. And so on.

The unbalanced schedules produced are annoying in some ways, but given
that this is happening in leagues where the championship comes from a
playoff system, they are not as unfair as they might seem at first glance.

18 teams in MLS currently make the playoffs.

A bit out of order, but let's post everything in one single message.

    Match Day 5 (make-up round)

    Tier 2
    ----
    Futbolmetrix 3 - 3 Jesus Petry (Marseille - Ajax)
MH 0 - 0 The Doctor (Bodo Glimt - FC Lugano)

Marseille's late comeback kept me just ahead of Jesus in the battle to avoid the wooden spoon. MH fails to go for the perfect season.

    Match day 6

    Tier 1
    ----
    Werner Pichler 6 - 0 Mark (Colo-Colo - Cobresal)
milivella 5 - 3 Jesper Lauridsen (NY Red Bulls - DC United)

Pts M GF GA GD Picks Team
    13 6 11 4 7 5 Werner Pichler
    8 6 8 8 0 6 milivella
    7 6 6 11 -5 6 Mark
    5 6 8 10 -2 5 Jesper Lauridsen

Werner emphatically turns away Mark's comeback attempt, and secures his 6th UPT title. Congrats!

    Yay! Thanks Colo²

    Ciao,
    Werner

There were also eventful results in the battle to avoid relegation.

The responsibilities of making someone choose the league and choosing
    the league are finally reunited!

Congrats! It will be a honour to take the crown from such a deserving head.

There were also eventful results in the battle to avoid relegation.

Care to be a bit more specific?

    Tier 2
    ----
Jesus Petry 1 - 1 MH (FC Dallas - Columbus)
The Doctor 5 - 3 Futbolmetrix (NY Red Bulls - DC United)

    5 6 11 14 -3 6 Futbolmetrix
    4 6 7 12 -5 6 Jesus Petry

MH limps to the finish line, but the draw is enough to get Jesus the wooden spoon.

When someone else gets it, it's wooden...
