Yes there are going to be results in this post.

SO in the WC world of U-20 football, Oceania has half their members qualified, heck Dominican Republic are in it! They play baseball! The fricvkin Limeys are in it! Even Fiji are there.

Anyhow, they do the good old fashioned 24 team WC in the world of u-20, the one where nearly every team qualifies for the ko stage.

I watched about 5 mins of it so far (it just started today with 4 games) and USA scored in the 93 min to beat Ecuador. Based on the first day, I can tell you CONCACAF is better than S America, but S America is better than ASia, but even stranger,
Oceania is better than the Rockingest confederation in the world of football. OF course UEFA is miles better than OFC.
I dont think AFC have any teams in under 20?

So CONCACAF powerhouse Dominican Republic lost to Nigeria, but in the MOTD from yesterday Italy beat Brazil 3-2, though I dont know in the World of U20 football if Brazil and Italy are powerhouses, maybe Fiji and Gambia are powerhouses in the u20 world
of football? For all I know, the match today between Gambia and Honduras may be the MOTD? For the record, in the twenty-two tournament editions staged, eleven different nations have won the title. Argentina U20 is the most successful team with six
titles, followed by Brazil U20 with five titles. Portugal U20 and Serbia U20 have both won two titles (with the latter winning once as Yugoslavia U20), while Ghana U20, Germany U20, Spain U20, France U20, England U20, Ukraine U20 and Russia U20 (as the
USSR U20) have won the title once each. So I guess S America are the powerhouses of u20 football.

If it seems like a lot of teams come from non UEFA countries, that would be correct

The participating nations hail from Asia (4 spots), Africa (4), North America (4), South America (4), Oceania (2), and Europe (5) with Argentina participating as the host nation.

So there you have it, everything you ever wanted to know about the U20 World Cup.

I know they've been doing this since 2017, but I still find it astonishing, and that everyone appears to be
taking it in stride. Is it because OFC has 2/5th the number of UEFA members (no, actually it's exactly 1/5th),
2/5ths of UEFA's population (no), 2/5ths of UEFA's quality (hell no), 2/5ths of UEFA's clout with FIFA?

    Ciao,
    Werner

Well it compensates to some extent I suppose for the fact that Oceania is so under-represented at the senior World Cup. Not that it's much consolation given how much more important the senior World Cup is!

Nice. A chance for Italy to avenge Mr. Moreno.

You realise none of these players were born when that happened :)

I'm a bit unsure about how it's going to affect Byron Moreno. Do you think he's a fan of South Korea? (And if so, how concerned would he be about the U20 team?)

    Uruguay
Israel outpassing and generally outplaying Brazil in the first half, even though Brazil had the best chance. Still 0-0 at HT.
Better start by Brazil in the second half, and Marcos Leonardo (unfortunately already taken in Fantasy Scout) makes it 1-0
Anan Khalaily, one of the three Palestinian-Israeli on the squad, equalizes with a stunning header
    .
    End of regular time: 1-1

The last few minutes went more like you would have expected, with Brazil dominating and creating several chances. But Israel's defense held firm, so we go to ET
Mateus Nascimento scores within 30 seconds of the restart. but Hamza Shibli equalizes again one minute after that. 2-2
Dor Turgeman with a great solo goal. 3-2 Israel. We're into injury time of 1st half ET, and Israel is milking every possible second.

Ok, ref whistled for time, 15 minutes left
5 minutes left, and Israel has just missed nor one, but two penalties!

FT: Israel wins 3-2 and advances to the semis. This will go straight into the pantheon of greatest ever Israeli sporting achievements. Wow!

Followed straight up by a semifinal in the U-21 Euros, and a berth at the 2024 Paris Olympic Football Tournament.

I'd even rank that one a bit higher, I'm personally quite convinced that U-21 successes are noticeably closer to senior
results than ones by U-20 sides.

    Congrats again!

Probably true, as U21 is really a U23 side, so players are much more likely to be closer to the finished product. I wonder though for team like Israel whether one golden generation is enough to make up the gap with the established powers.

I haven't checked - how much overlap is there between the two sides?
Could it actually be two golden generations close to each other?
I know Gloukh is now there for the Euro after having missed the World Cup.

As far as I can tell, 5 players from the WC U20 roster are also in the Euro U21 roster:

Tomer Tzarfati: reserve GK, but will start the semifinal because the starting goalie has accumulated two yellows
Dor Turgeman: starting forward in the U21
Stav Lemkin: central defender, started all 4 matches
Roy Revivo (yes, the son of Haim -- I wasn't sure initially because Revivo is not that unusual a surname): Has played in three of the four matches
Anan Khalaili: has come in as a sub in all 4 matches

It looks as if three more players (Gloukh, Gorno and Abu Rumi) would have been eligible for the U20 WC, but were not called up/released by their teams.

For comparison, Italy's U21 squad (in which 20 of the 23 players are at least regular rotation players in Serie A/other top 5 leagues) does not have a single player who also played in the U20 WC, and only 4 of them would have been eligible: Udogie,
    Miretti, Gnonto and Scalvini.

I've come across a reddit comment that made me reflect on this and
consider a certain eurocentrism, because it was correctly pointed out
that CONMEBOL has no equivalent to UEFA's U21/U23 cycle and so the
U20 World Cup and its qualifiers are the end-all be-all in South American
youth football with the corresponding prestige.

While U-20 players in European football are often in a strange sort of limbo where they only are released from their clubs when they are not yet an
integral part of the senior team - which, at that age, they ought to be if
they are real talents (see, again, Gloukh).

So perhaps I'm underrating Israel's U-20 achievement a bit. They did eliminate the best Brazil youth side available.

BTW end of the fairy tales in the U-21 semis, England v Israel finished 3-0 and Spain v Ukraine 5-1.

Well it does have Olympic qualification , though that is on a four year
    cycle.

On that topic, the EURO "U21" competition is for players born after
January 1, 2020. A lot of those players would no longer be 23 or under
for the Olympics next year (looking at Spain in particular) - seems a
    bit odd.

    and so the
