Two way off grid communication for my wife and I?

https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r90s2d/two_way_off_grid_communication_for_my_wife_and_i/
Hey! My wife currently lives in Southern California and I’m in Northern California. I worry about a situation in which communication networks went
down and I wouldn’t be able to get to her.
The distance between us is roughly 500 miles.
I’m basically looking to set up ham radios or something similar to that,
that are relatively portable, in order to always be able to reach her in
the case of communication networks failing.
Do you all have any recommendations?
My main question is if I could specifically talk to her using a Yaetsu or a Baofeng type device.
Thanks! I’m completely new to this so I really appreciate your help. submitted by /u/potatodestroyer808

Hello, I wonder why 10-meter band can reflect on the upper layer of
atmosphere using AM and not with FM. I have searched a lot on the web but I didnt found an answer. submitted by /u/taksidiotis

New General Operator setting up first HF riggeneral questions.
Posted: 04 Dec 2021 02:24 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r90r17/new_general_operator_setting_up_first_hf/
I did search a lot so apologies if this is actually covered…finding some conflicting info.
General info: Icom IC-7300 and a Cobra Ultralite Junior antenna…73-foot dipole with ladder line in the middle. Located in WA state with no HOA and
a number of tall (75+ ft) fir/cedar trees surrounding back yard.
on the back of the transceiver there’s a ground screw…what should that actually be attached to? I know what the manual says but wanted
confirmation or a real-world opinion.
opinions on making the dipole horizontal or inverted v? Assuming I can get
it up there, I have a couple trees I could run it horizontally broadside to
the continental US/Alaska/BC about 60 feet up. Alternatively would an
inverted V be better?
some on a review thread mentioned using a 4:1 current balun on the antenna…thoughts on this?
Probably more things I don’t even know to ask, but this is what I’m wondering now. Thanks in advance…I’ll keep googling in the meantime. submitted by /u/Ok-Piano-4745

FTM-400 crossband repeater question
Posted: 04 Dec 2021 09:27 AM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r8uh86/ftm400_crossband_repeater_question/
I have been playing with my new FTM-400, specifically using it as a
crossband repeater. I have it working with tone squelch, etc, and have been activating it with an HT. I had a conversation for about 10 minutes with another station, then that station and a third had a continuous
conversation for about 10 minutes.
Roughly halfway through their conversation, my HT stopped producing audio;
it was receiving at full power but only the occasional word would actually
come through on audio. The FTM-400 itself was playing the audio on its
speaker. I noticed it got pretty warm and was running the fan.. did I
exceed the duty cycle? I set the tx power on the secondary band down to the minimum so it is no longer transmitting at full power constantly.
After it cooled down I tried again and it seems to be working fine. Im also using a home made antenna with 3/32 inch bronze brazing rods as the driven elements, is that sufficient for 50W? Any other ideas as to what may have caused it? submitted by /u/LorenWard

Can you switch between two antennas through a single feed line?
Posted: 04 Dec 2021 12:37 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r8yjpt/can_you_switch_between_two_antennas_through_a/
Hey All,
Just passed my general and am going to put up an HF antenna outside near my current Diamond 2m/70cm vertical. The current antenna is connected back to
my shack with a run of LMR-400 feed line. My question is, is there a way I
can somehow connect the new HF antenna to this same feed line and have a
way to switch between them? I’m thinking some kind of Y splitter or device that can change between them from the shack.
The reason for this is getting the feed cable run the first time was a huge ordeal. We are planning on moving in the next 6 months and I really don’t want to put the effort in to drilling more holes in the house and feeding
the cable through the ceiling to my shack. Just looking for a simple
solution to use my existing feed line for both antennas and where I don’t have to go through the cable routing ordeal again. submitted by

New HT For My Needs
Posted: 04 Dec 2021 02:00 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r90946/new_ht_for_my_needs/
Looking for a bit of guidance from more knowledgeable folks than myself.
Been contemplating getting a new HT dual band (2m, 70cm) radio. Ive been looking at HRO and R & L. Just took a look at Giga Parts, too, but less
than impressed with availability and price. I broached the subject with my
XYL, and now that the swelling has gone down in my right eye, I thought Id reach out on here for a few suggestions. My desires are:
Dual band HT, comes with everything (cables, charger, etc) to get it up and running (or can download free software to program). In my area there are no repeaters within reach that do any digital, and I am not the least bit
familiar with DMR, Fusion, Talk Groups, etc..... so cannot imagine that I
would be motivated to try to tackle that mode at this time. It would be
nice to be able to hook it up for packet/aprs at some time in the future,
but not necessary. Prefer a name brand and looking for under $200. I kind
of like the looks of the Alinco HTs, and the Yaesus look good, too, but Ive heard some issues with battery life on the Yaesus. When staying away from digital, it looks like $100 would buy a nice unit with several accessories
and still be under $200.
Being able to run off 12v in the car would be good (new vehicle doesnt have
a good place to put a mobile rig when we take a road trip), as well as a
mobile dual band antenna.
So, if you were going to fill your own Christmas sock, which way would you lean, and why? submitted by /u/ka9wrz

Bought Yaesu FT-70DR, no YSF repeaters nearby
Posted: 04 Dec 2021 01:49 PM PST
https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/r901lg/bought_yaesu_ft70dr_no_ysf_repeaters_nearby/
Seems like a good analog radio. I am not a digital guy, but figured I would
get a quality handheld that does C4FM and try it out (I do not want to do
DMR). Sadly, and a stupid misstep on my part, there are no YSF repeaters in range - not even close.
I do not want to buy a VVMMDD thingie (whatever theyre called...), or other kind of digital relay thing for home - I dont want to use my HT at home for digital ops. That doesnt make sense to me.
It was not horribly expensive, and I got it on sale + another $10 off, with free shipping, so my total cost was under $150.
So my question is:
Should I keep the radio anyway for analog comms (I already have 3 other dual-band HTs that are perfectly fine), or, should I get rid of it?

IC7300 UP and DOWN arrow buttons just above the big dial...I know what they

IC7300 UP and DOWN arrow buttons just above the big dial...I know what they
do in Memory mode but what do they do in VFO mode?
I have my memory setup for all the FT8 frequencys for each band. That way I
can quickly scroll though the bands and hear some relative measure of propagation. So thats useful. However, when I switch to VFO mode, those UP
and DOWN buttons do nothing but change the number in the display. Is that
what your 7300 does too?
What Id really like is to use the UP and DOWN arrow buttons (VFO mode) to operate the BAND UP or BAND DOWN function that the microphone buttons can
be set to. Does anybody know if that can be done?
Thanks in advance! submitted by /u/monkwithgun
