Got some 33cm radios TK-981 and XPR-6580. The seller kindly programmed them
for me. Made some contacts through the local repeater on the handheld and
need to get some coax to set up the mobile radio at home, or in the car.

Especially when they talk about wanting to get their licenses. It gives the amateur radio community a really bad look, and actually pushes people away
from our hobby. Shouting at them on an internet forum won’t make them stop using their Baofengs illegally. Honestly, if Reddit was my first
introduction to ham radio, I probably wouldn’t have gotten into it.

What is a good beginner UHF/VHF handheld for around 30-70 in UK? (No
Baofengs unless they have a good build quality) If you can recommend an
antenna to go with the handheld it's fine as long as the total comes under
    80.

    Waterproof/resident ht ?

    Posted: 23 Jul 2022 12:47 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w6cgm5/waterproofresident_ht/

    Hi guys,
Stand up paddling has been a great hobby for me in the past to now and
since last month, ham radio also, and I would really like taking a ht with
me, but since I know how often I trip or fall over, I wondered if anyone
knows / has experience with waterproof hts. I have seen the yaesu vx
series, but I am not sure how good theyd perform, since I know it would probably fall deep into the water very often, and it should even be able to withstand me, falling, jumping or diving into the water.
If anyone had recommendations, please just write the product name or tips down under

Today at Ham Holiday OKC, I picked up a hardly used FT-2900R for a steal-
    $100
Now, I plan on using it as a mobile rig, and Im looking for wiring/mounting locations for a 1997-2001 Toyota Camry. Id like to put a key-on relay in so
the radio shuts off when the key isnt on, preventing a draw. Any

Fan dipole with 2m vertical elements.

    Posted: 23 Jul 2022 03:40 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w6g9br/fan_dipole_with_2m_vertical_elements/

I’m looking to build a fan dipole for 20m and 10m. I’d rather not sacrifice vhf for a single antenna, so I figured I’d add 2m. As I understand, signals from repeaters are vertically polarized, perpendicular to how the elements
of a fan dipole would normally lie. My question is. Would there be any detriment to arranging the 2m elements such that they’re vertical while maintaining the 10m and 20m elements horizontal? The antenna will be in my attic and I’m using a QRP radio. submitted by /u/t_shaped_interests

Has anyone with an FTM-300DR ever heard their radio play a jingle? I can’t figure out why it played a little happy tune. I was listening to FRS on A
and transmitting APRS on B and I was driving on the highway when it played. Can’t find anything in the manual for what it would indicate. This was
~35-45 minutes after first turning it on.

I built a DIY CTCSS Encoder, that I can control from my phone!

    Posted: 22 Jul 2022 07:15 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w5s64l/i_built_a_diy_ctcss_encoder_that_i_can_control/

I know that this is a pretty simple project compared to what some of you
people do, but I am very proud of myself. My first VHF radio was a Yaesu FT-726r that I got from my school, but it didn’t have ctcss. After much research I found the SARCNET arduino encoder. Using the code and schematic
from that guide I made a similar encoder, but I controlled it via a serial connection on my laptop, instead of a keypad. Fast forward a couple months
and I get another radio without ctcss. The Icom IC-25a. I successfully
found a point to inject a tone and managed to get it working completely,
after adding a couple resistors between the encoder and radio. There was a problem though. This radio is a mobile radio, and I don’t want to have to
lug my laptop around when I want to use it. So after some brainstorming I
found a NodeMCU ESP8266. I managed to set up a webserver where I would tell
the esp8266 a tone and it would send the arduino that tone via a serial connection. I also completely redid the code on the arduino so instead of having a formula to generate the tone I used the tone() function, which is built into the arduino. All in all I think this was a very successful
project and I wanted to share it with people. Here’s a link to the GitHub.
I don’t have a schematic up yet, but I will add that soon. https://github.com/NGgeek/ctcss-encoder Anyways. Thanks for checking this
out and if you have suggestions/things you would do differently, please
tell me! KC1RFE submitted by /u/NathanG2005

Questions About Attic Antennas and Antenna Distance

    Posted: 23 Jul 2022 07:33 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/w65ex7/questions_about_attic_antennas_and_antenna/

I want to put a small antenna farm in my attic. My attic is reasonably long
but its not tall enough for me to stand up in. So, large verticals are off
    the table.
Right now Im thinking installing 2x VHF/UHF antennas, one for ham bands and
one for GMRS. Those antennas will likely just be off the shelf side-mounted Yagis as thats what I use now and it works fine. For the HF antenna, Im thinking Ill go with a long wire >1/4 wave length for all the bands I want
to work but not tuned to a specific band. Ill use a remote antenna tuner to compensate, obviously.
What Im curious about is antenna distance and the possibility of mutual interference. I know there is a rule of thumb that says I need to keep
antennas >1/4 wavelength apart to prevent mutual interference. Does
orientation matter? That is, can I have two vertical VHF/UHF antennas >1/4
2m wave apart but have the horizontally oriented HF antenna far closer and
    get away with it?
Also, if I wanted to hook up a CB to the horizontal HF antenna, given that
CB antennas are almost always vertical, would that even work? submitted

What headphones do you use for your radio operation, and WHY do you use
    that particular make and model?
I use Audio-Technica ATH M30x professional monitor headphones (cans) https://www.audio-technica.com/en-gb/ath-m30x
I use my rigs filters to shape the audio. Ive replaced the over-the-ear
pads with Gel pads. Wearing these cans is comfortable enough to use for extended periods of time (such as contests).
The mid-range with these cans is superior to other cans Ive had.
They are rugged, so taking them out to the field isnt a problem.
