    New Alinco DR-735 Install

    Posted: 09 Apr 2022 10:45 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tzybwr/new_alinco_dr735_install/

Just finished installing my new Alinco in the Tacoma. I mounted the remote
head with a Ram X-Grip suction cup mount and placed the control body under
the drivers seat. I mounted two RoadPRO RPSP-15 speakers in the cubby above
the front cup holders with 3M dual lock. That stuff is seriously strong. Instead of buying the $50 Alinco remote cable, I created my own using RJ-12 connectors and CAT5. I did the same with the mic extension using a CAT5
    patch cable and a coupler.
The mic is mounted with a magnetic cell phone holder I found at Walmart for less than $6. My antenna is a Larsen NMO 2/70B.

    QRP Dummy Load Problems

    Posted: 09 Apr 2022 07:30 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u0861x/qrp_dummy_load_problems/

SOLVED: /u/ArmstrongRotor suggested to remove the capacitor and that seems
    to have solved the problem.
I have a 12w QRPGuys Dummy load that tests perfectly unless you put power
    into the load.
It measures 50.4 ohms, and my NanoVNA and multiple radios show the SWR to
be 1:1 with under 1w of power. But once you increase the power from 1w to
5w the SWR increases immediately to 3:1.
All four 3w metal film resistors test at 198ohms and look fine. The dummy
load is connected directly to the radios and another good load that I have tests normally.
Any suggestions on how to remedy the issue? Im thinking Ill have to just replace the resistors but they seem fine by themselves.

For super portable SOTA-type applications, does the IC-705 do anything
    better than the Elecraft KX2?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2022 02:45 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u0334z/for_super_portable_sotatype_applications_does_the/

The 705 has the fancy display (and being a 7300 owner a familiar
interface), but it is almost triple the weight and if you don’t use a power supply will only run 5w and the KX2 does 12w with the built in battery.
My read is that the KX2 is much better for extreme portable use cases, but
not sure if there’s something I’m missing.
I use a full 100W IC-7100 for POTA where I don’t have to carry the gear
very far and a 7300 for a base station, but from what I can tell Elecraft
is the move for ultra-light portable ops.
Some of the QRP transceiver kits are at appealing price points but I worry about the quality. submitted by /u/CaptainMoronhigh

Getting started with RF amplifier circuits

    Posted: 09 Apr 2022 11:28 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tzz6gz/getting_started_with_rf_amplifier_circuits/

I have my Amateur Extra license, a degree in EE, but didn’t take the path
of RF circuits in college. I stuck with antenna theory and design- give me
a Smith Chart and I’m at home.
I’d like to learn how to design and build some basic RF circuits,
eventually leading up to my own power amplifiers. I don’t know where to get started. I purchased the ARRL Handbook series of books but honestly it’s a little too hard to follow.
What would be some good books to start with? I don’t need basic circuit theory. But need help with transistors, FETs, etc. Starting with basic circuits, going to more advanced ones.
And what type of equipment do I need, other than some breadboards,
soldering iron, variable power supply? Do I need a signal generator and a
scope as well? submitted by /u/BenDerisgrate

Need help understanding impedence matches for VHF Yagis

    Posted: 09 Apr 2022 03:09 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/u03kis/need_help_understanding_impedence_matches_for_vhf/

I’ve seen quite a bit for VHF Yagis out there; but more so calculators and the math for 3, 4, and 7 element designs.
Can someone help me understand how to calculate what my hairpin match
    should look like?
Im not trying to get overly complicated, but I bought some Fair Rite 61s so
I could wrap my wire connected to my RG-58 around it, except they’re SUPER tiny. It looks like it’s more feasible to simply make a hairpin match. However, figuring out (without test equipment) what the sizing and gauge of wire needs to be is hard to figure out. I’m somewhat of a beginner, so any advice is helpful. 20M mag loop with radials/groundplane?

    Posted: 09 Apr 2022 07:33 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tzuf82/20m_mag_loop_with_radialsgroundplane/

At some point in the near future, Im planning to build a mag loop antenna
for 20 meters. My intent is to use 1/2 in. Copper pipe with a total length
of 16 ft. on the main loop. Several sources have suggested that the
addition of radials or a mesh ground plane would substantially improve the performance, but are rather scant on any details.
So...does anyone have any experience with this, to share any hints and tips
for that part of the antenna such as what spacing to have between the loop
    & radials? submitted by /u/dereks777

I when I receive this radio, I’m going to separate the head and mount it in my 2014 Ford Fiesta. I need some answers and recommendations: What is the
best mounting options and hardware? I think I’d like a CD slot mount or a vent mount.
Is the mic connector the same as The ID 5100? I’ve already got an extension cable.
Any other recommendations are greatly appreciated. 73s submitted by /u/Saxman31

What is the Q of a parallel RLC circuit, if it is resonant at 7.125 MHz, L
is 10.1 microhenrys and R is 100 ohms?
    So Q=(2 × 3.14 x 7125000 x 0.0000101)/100 Which gives me 4.52 but it says
the answer is 0.221 What am I doing wrong? submitted by /u/SugoiRyu69
