Not an April Fools joke: 5H3MB Verified in LotW

Not an April Fools joke: Yesterday, I completed a two-way Morse code radio exchange on 18 MHz, with 5H3MB, who is in Tanzania. Thats a new country,
for me, and a new one on CW (Morse code). Im very happy about this. The DX operator, Maurizio, is very kind. He was only in Tanzania for a short
visit. He will return as 5H3MB in September.
So, toward my at-least-100-countries-with-CW-in-2022 goal, Im now at 96 verified DXCC countries/entities for CW, and 210 Mixed mode DXCC. Yay!

Can we add a rule 10: no more blocking the sub for jokes?

    Posted: 01 Apr 2022 02:43 PM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tu2ejb/can_we_add_a_rule_10_no_more_blocking_the_sub_for/

I love this sub; its perhaps the most engaging amateur radio community on
the Internet. I check frequently through the day, make lots of comments, interact with a lot of people, and have made some important connections
with others in the homebrew hobby here. I believe my contributions have
been generally positive and helpful on the sub.
Today the sub got marked private apparently as a joke, referencing the ARRL
web site migration, and it basically removed the happy place I get to go to between tasks through the day. I also couldnt find some posts Id made to
share links with people, and couldnt look over my post or comment history because I was excluded from the sub.
Can we maybe make a rule that the mods wont disable the sub for a cheap
laugh in the future? The frustration cant possibly be worth the giggles. submitted by /u/jephthai

    Fox Hunt setup questions

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 07:32 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tuk7p3/fox_hunt_setup_questions/

My friend took me out for a fox hunt last week, and now I caught the bug
and want to get my own setup going. The group goes out weekly and start off
in vehicles, so Im looking to set up something. Many have a contraption strapped to their roof that the passenger can control through the window.
Two have drilled holes in their roofs for a mast (one has a Jeep with tee
tops and found another top, so can swap it out when he sells).
Now, I have an f150 with a sun roof, and I want to be able to go solo. My
two thoughts are to have a piece of plywood in the sun roof with the mast coming into the truck, or something in the bed that I can rotate with a
chain or rope through the 5th window.
My problem is I cant find many videos or photos of mobile fox hunt set ups. Does anyone here have a set-up they are willing to share photos of or know where I can find some for inspiration? submitted by /u/array_repairman

    Terrified of Anytone DMR LOL

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 08:48 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tulwb0/terrified_of_anytone_dmr_lol/

I recently bought the Anytone AT-D878UVII Plus Digital DMR Dual-band
Handheld Commercial Radio with GPS, APRS RX/TX and Bluetooth.
Now I’m suddenly seeing folks advising the programming is a nightmare. I’m a rookie, but wanted all the feature so the radio would grow with me as I explore HAM radio.
Can someone set me at ease so I don’t return the radio?
My main goal is analog but I wanted my young family to speak with folks worldwide before jumping into a base station for HF. submitted by /u/NovelTraditional1172

I’ve been pretty much strictly interested in analog, but yesterday I tried doing some digital work. Downloaded wsjt-x and after some tinkering I got
it to work. I tried ft8 and wspr and started having a weird problem on
both. Rx was fine, but when I started to tx the whole computer went nuts,
and the on board laptop mouse would absolutely not work. During the tx
things like alt+tab would go crazy and my web browser would jump up and
down, but after tx most everything would return to normal except use of the mouse. It just would not not work. The only answer I’ve been able to come
up with is that my usb cable doesn’t have a ferrite choke and the RF in my shack must be killing the laptop. When I restart it, which Is a process to
do after every tx, it works fine again. Does anyone have any ideas?

Trying to get back into things. In the process, Im finding discrepancies between Echolink and Repeaterbook. Repeaters listed on Echolink, arent on Repeaterbook, Callsign different etc. Simplex links are even worse. Google
is only semi helpful at best. Echolink doesnt give you frequencies either.
Or it depends on the link owner adding the frequency etc to the
description. Im limited anyway due to my very cheap Tidradio HT and at the moment thats not going to change any time soon. Advise would be

    WiFi antenna/Laptop Internal

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 11:19 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tupgdh/wifi_antennalaptop_internal/

I broke 1 of the 2 antennas connectors on my laptop. Where it connects to
the WiFi board. The wire/connector is MHF4. I purchased this to replace the existing antenna. I have a new WiFi card to replace this one. One connector came off fine. The other took the socket right off the wifi adapter and is
now stuck in the connector. I quit. Spent hours trying to work it out of
    the wire-ill just replace this.
However the way its routed..is complicated. It runs up into a display
hinge, then behind the display/display bezel. The display is primarily glued/taped together inside. I dont want to take it apart because of the
way it goes back together-the bezel is extremely fragile and Id have to
    reapply tape/glue.
So...is there a reason I cant just re-route the WiFi antennas wires to terminate somewhere inside the bottom half of the chassis? Is the EMF from these 2 antennas (2.4ghz+5ghzwifi/bluetooth) enough to impact adjacent components?
I dont want to use an external WiFi adapter. If I have absolutely no other option, and I cant re-route the antenna..Ill bite the bullet and buy a new display bezel. It is sold by HP as a kit with glue/tape.
Thanks so much guys! Sorry if a bit off-topic. I have a vague understanding
of RF, but wanted your input. I dont want to radically change the operating characteristics of the antenna, or damage any nearby components by
    introducing interference. submitted by /u/ballwasher89

So I recently picked up one of the N9TAX Dual band Slim-jims to try to
reach farther with my Baofeng AR-152 when Im at home. Currently its just
hung up next to my window, linked to the radio with an SO-239 to BNC
adapter, about 3 feet of RG-58C/U BNC cable, and a BNC to SMA adapter on
the radio itself. Im hoping to install it in the attic to gain maybe
another ten feet of height, but Ill need a longer run of co-ax to make that work. Any tips on what I should buy? submitted by /u/Jessica_T

    hello.

i am looking to make so QRP DX contacts. i am still new and trying
different antenna setup. i would like to use some automated Spotters that
would tell me how far did i reach, log the info on a website. i am pretty
sure it exist. i found a website, but i am not sure whether it is automated stations logging the contacts or people just manually entering them.
is this only for CW? i dont see how a bot could understand voice (on the cheap).

UV-5R offset confusion - I have BOTH + and - on the display screen for a positive offeset repeater

    Posted: 02 Apr 2022 06:12 AM PDT https://www.reddit.com/r/amateurradio/comments/tuikpu/uv5r_offset_confusion_i_have_both_and_on_the/

    The radio SCREEN reads:
    S + - Battery icon
    VE3NIB 40
    down arrow (vfo b) 443.500 (VE3NIB frequency) 40
So I have both vfo a&b on the same repeater (vfo a = alpha vfo b = numeric)
    The radio SETTINGS are:
    VFO A:
    SFT-D - OFF
    OFFSET - 000.000
    VFO B:
    SFT-D - OFF
    OFFSET - 000.000
Since both VFOs have the same settings and are on the same repeater, is
there a reason there is a - on the screen?
    Manual says:
    6. + appears when positve shift is activated.
    7. - appears when negative shift is activated.
Im not (or should not be and unaware if I am) but I am not doing anything
    that involves a negative offset.
    The radioreference info is"
    443.50000 - 448.50000 - VE3NIB RM - 103.5 PL - VE3NIB - VE3NIB - Toronto -
    FM - Ham
    This https://www.reddit.com/r/Baofeng/comments/argmos/why_does_the_radio_have_a_on_the_top_screen_for/
says that both + and - are wired to the same circuit driver to cut costs
and cannot be separated but I just had them separate in VFO mode. (My +/-
looks just like the radio in the photo)
The radio was programmed using CHIRP. When playing with settings in VFO
mode without CHIRP I can get + and - to show individually. Does tha mean
this is a CHIRP issue? Is this a fixable issue within the program or would
I have to erase and reprogram the radio manually?
I just upgraded from a HTX-202 a few days ago and still trying to set it
up. This is radio is a whole new ball game. I used EVERY SINGLE feature on
the 202 except the DTMF squelch but this UV-5R has tones of stuff Ill
    probably never even touch.
Is there some other setting I should be looking at here? I would remove the
    - symbol but in settings but vfo a&b ALREADY have SFT-D set to off 🤷‍♂️

Several years ago I was walking through Green Hill Park in Worcester, Massachusetts. I noticed two or three older blue Chevrolet Suburbans parked near the top of a hill in the park. There were large whip antennas on the vehicles. Several men who appeared to be Central or South American were congregated around the vehicles. One of the Suburbans had the hood open and
the engine was running. Curious, I wandered by and passed close enough to
see inside the engine compartment. I observed that there were 3 additional alternators installed inside the engine compartment, with framing made from blocks of wood to hold them, and a large belt zig-zagging back and forth to
run the alternators. Shortly after I passed them they abruptly packed up
    and left.
I remember that the antennas were long, maybe 9 CB antennas.
Any theories as to what they might have been up to? submitted by /u/wernerverklempt
