• Grovesnor recital livestream

From Al Eisner@21:1/5 to All on Fri Mar 10 17:04:46 2023
This may be stretching the meaning of "recording" a bit. :)

Benjamin Grosvenor is giving a recital at the Steinway Society of San
Jose on March 25, also (like their entire season) available on
livestream for 48 hours starting at recital time, at a reduced
    livestream price of $20. https://steinwaysociety.com/concerts/benjamin-grosvenor-2022-2023/
The program is of familiar works (which some might consider a negative): Bach-Busoni Chaconne, Schumann Fantasie, Ravel Tombeau, Prokofiev #7.

Also, later in the season, a program of Grieg, Ravel and Chopin
by Juho Pohjonen, a pianist I've heard many times and consistently
    found interesting and worthwhile.

Thanks! I heard BG already in this program,

Thanks - interesting work, although not sure if I would want to hear
it again. I think the first time I've heard Pohjonen play Finnish
music (certainly the first time for contemporary Finnish music).

The most interesting recital of his I've attended (I mentioned it here
a few years ago) consisted of Rameau suites in the first half (very
effectively done) and three Scriabin sonatas in the second half. There's
an example of his Rameau on youtube, but I didn't find any of his Scriabin.

Well, I think we are all going to have to stretch our definition of 'recording', Al, because this seems to be the way things are going. Does the Society provide streaming video or just sound? Certainly superior to just a broadcast in terms of
accessibility and international reach - I might even watch / listen to the recital myself.

Mr Grosvenor has come a long way from Westcliffe-on-Sea, which is a bit too close to Sarfend-on-Sea, not a des res these days.

Only absolute scrooges depend on YouTube unless of course, they are on welfare. As previously reported, more than once I'm afraid, I subscribe to the Royal Opera House, Glyndebourne and the Berlin Philharmonic, plus Amazon Music for Count Basie, the
Andrews Sisters, the Chordettes and Linda Ronstadt. Then there's Arte which is free, but as you pointed out yourself, you do need a VPN which is not. Oh yes, and the Met, but not much to see there.

Yesterday it was Darcy Bussell in Delibes' 'Sylvia', so much nicer than Mr Darcy's bustle, and tonight it was Barrie Kotsky's 'Carmen', a most challenging performance.

'Sylvia' contains what must be the most parodied piece of classical music in history ....

Total non-sense. Many, if not most or
all major record companies post vast
swaths of their catalogs on YouTube.

They earn enough money by doing
this to more than make up for what
they might be losing if a handful of
people no longer buy the physical
CDs. Remember that the fact one
doesn't pay directly for the physical

Calm down, Deek, I'm sure we all sympathise with your present situation, even though I personally would never put money in a bank with Silicon Valley in its monicker, and bitcoin has always sounded a bit dodgy. It can't be easy living in that tent in
Central City East, next door to your accountant now he's out of jail, and of course there's no room for your $250,000 sound system even if it wasn't in hock, so I guess You Tube just has to do. I'm rather fond of barrel house pianists myself - Cripple
Clarence Lofton, comes to mind, also Jimmy Yancey, although he usually did rent parties, and I imagine rent must be a sensitive topic in your part of the woods right now. And then there's Champion Jack Dupree.

Alma Mahler as we know now, was famously in the same predicament, but I don't see you adopting her solution, since you're the wrong sex and the wrong shape and besides, Friday nights after sundown are out.

Thanks, Al. I'm in. I wonder if between us we could scrape together $20.00 so that Deek can watch it too if he can get his phone out of hock by then?

If I am interpreting "Deek" correctly, he said he is attending in person.

All right. Three cents. But I'm not making a nickel on it.

I'm out. The stakes are too high. I'll save my nickels and dimes for steaks.

Benjamin Grosvenor is giving a recital at the Steinway
Society of San Jose on March 25, also (like their entire
season) available on livestream for 48 hours starting at
recital time, at a reduced livestream price of $20. https://steinwaysociety.com/concerts/benjamin-grosvenor-2022-2023/
The program is of familiar works (which some might
    consider a negative): Bach-Busoni Chaconne,
Schumann Fantasie, Ravel Tombeau, Prokofiev #7.

Thanks for the tip. I just came back from the concert.

It was fabulous! Everything perfect. As good as piano
playing can possibly get on a Stoneway. I wish he could
have played on a Fazioli or on a Bosie, but this was a
Stoneway event. The instrument provided by the SJ
Steinway Society was decent for San Jose, however
not as good or as well tuned as the one he played 4
    years ago in San Francisco.

The livestream is available for a couple of days.
Very highly recommended if one can afford it.
