I can't imagine why "Imagine" wasn't in there years ago. I also have a
weakness for "Margeritaville, which is played a lot on the local oldies
station (oldies nowadays meaning 70s and 80s).

also impressive, the story of 1930's journalist Dorothy Thompson

and the sound of "Wang Dang Doodle" from Koko Taylor and company

Hardly. I listened to current music in the '80s. The lion's share of it has NOT withstood the test of time. (Huey Lewis & The News, anyone? How about Air Supply?)

OTOH great to see the wonderful Ko Ko Taylor recognized with her "Wang
Dang Doodle" (my introduction to the song- never heard the Wolf till
    a little later).

And of course an all time favorite from 1962 by dem Joysey Boys :)

MY TOP 30 RECORDINGS FROM 1980
    26. People Who Died - Jim Carroll Band

I remember one lunchtime when I was working in midtown Manhattan and browsing in a record store on Broadway when this was played on the store's speakers. It totally knocked me out! I bought it and put it on my jukebox for quite some time. I also bought
two of his books: "The Basketball Diaries" and "Forced Entry: The Downtown Diaries." He was a fucked up mess, but he made a contribution to my life.

Not a record I would expect you to like.

    The Kinks - Come Dancing
    Prince - 1999 {tad repetitive but pleasant to dance to}

All huge mainstream hits. Thanks Pedestrian Geoff.

No Bruce, these artist-songs are not pedestrian.

Pedestrian means that they are all huge well known mainstream hits. Not one lesser known item in the bunch. Is that all you know from the 80s, huge mainstream hits?

As an adjective pedestrian means "lacking imagination."

Your list lacks imagination as you only show huge mainstream hits.

The Jim Carroll Band record that Bill loved did not even crack the top 100 on Billboard.

Here are the amazing lyrics (all were actual people, including a G-Berg):

Teddy sniffing glue he was twelve years old
Fell from the roof on East Two-nine
Cathy was eleven when she pulled the plug
On twenty six reds and a bottle of wine
Bobby got leukemia, fourteen years old
He looked like sixty five when he died
He was a friend of mine
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
They were all my friends and just died
G-berg and Georgie let their gimmicks go rotten
So they died of hepatitis in upper Manhattan
Sly in Vietnam, bullet in the head
Bobby OD'd on Drano on the night that he was wed
They were two more friends of mine (two more friends that died)
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
They were all my friends and they died
Mary took a dry dive from a hotel room
Bobby hung himself from a cell in The Tombs
Judy jumped in front of a subway train
Eddie got slit in the jugular vein
And Eddie, I miss you more than all the others
    And I salute you brother
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
They were all my friends, and they died
Herbie pushed Tony from the Boys' Club roof
Tony thought that his rage was just some goof
But Herbie sure gave Tony some, some bitchen proof
Hey, Herbie said, Tony, can you fly?
But Tony couldn't fly, Tony died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
They were all my friends and they died
Brian got busted on a narco rap
He beat the rap by rattin' on some bikers
He said, hey, I know it's dangerous
    But it sure beats Riker's
But the next day he got offed
    By the very same bikers
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died
Those are people who died, died

I agree about "Come Dancing." Wish the outro with the horns was much

    It's great?

So you two would give it a 9?

It's good, but nowhere near great IMO. It's #19 on my list of favorites by the Kinks. I'd say that the top 4 or 5 would qualify as "great" for me.

    THE KINKS
    1. All Day And All Of The Night
    2. Till The End Of The Day
    3. A Well Respected Man
    4. You Really Got Me
    5. Sunny Afternoon
    6. Tired Of Waiting For You
    7. Lola
    8. Set Me Free
    9. Low Budget
    10. (Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman

Firstly I'm surprised that Di didn't ask her "pally" question of the
one actual British member of this online crazy house :)

Okay, the "pally" in question is a glittering "palais" dance hall and
more specifically I believe it's the most famous UK palais----
Hammersmith Palais to be exact----in West London that Ray Davies is
    referring to.

This top UK dance venue was often the location for the long running
and vrery popular BBC-TV show "Come Dancing" (which title Davies
appropriated for his song of course)

FWIW I never cared for the Kinks or this number very much--for a
better song about the location in question here try "White Man (In
    Hammersmith Palais)" by The Clash.
