• From Jimmy Bowen to Keely Smith to the Beatles

From Willie Williams@21:1/5 to All on Fri Feb 25 15:29:30 2022
Remember Jimmy Bowen's lightweight (but infectious) hit "I'm Sticking with You"? Well, it turns out Jimmy was no lightweight. He went to the Wharton School, then became a pretty successful record producer and married Keely Smith (who was married also to
Louis Prima and had affairs with Frank Sinatra and Clint Eastwood). I love Keely ("That Old Black Magic," "I've Got You Under My Skin," others). But I was surprised to discover she recorded an album of Beatles songs, arranged by jazz great Benny Carter.
I wonder what John and Paul thought of it (it came out in '64). I have a feeling Paul liked it more than John did. (You can find the album on Spotify.)

Neglected to say that the most charitable thing that can be said about the Keely Smith album is that it's a hoot, and that I doubt it's ever been played twice..

She's a good singer, but her Beatles renditions are....trippy.

Not many Beatles songs work in lounge singer style.
