The Jhankar beats were an original attempt at remixing Filmi sound tracks to western beats by Indian record companies. The instrument primarily used for this purpose was the Roland SPD-11, a version of the OCTAPAD, a portable drum set popularly owned by Desi musicians across the world.
However, fueled by better remixing by Bally Sagoo and others. A new level of quality appeared that put the Jhankar beats out of business as quickly as they
    had come in.

i came to this thread from watching guns and gulaabs ( web series), where in the opening scene the protagonist discovers his cassette is laced with jhankar beats and quickly discards it. When did a bit of google search, i stumbled upon this golden
thread back from 1998, Man! I wonder where the people on this thread are now :)

    Absolutely the same for me.
I fondly remember Jhankar beats as they had become quite common when I started listening to music on audio cassettes (1990 onwards).
Love this thread - such wonderful history (something I have always wondered). Alas, there's nothing about the original Jhankar beats on the internet except for this thread. Such a wonderful conversation, guys (and gals?).

It was done as a way to bypass copyrights through a loophole, as original cassettes were very expensive, a certain businessman re recorded it and added a melody of a particular instrument. And he started selling it at one third of the price of original
songs, and it went off like crazy. And you know what the company's name was- T-Series. And this person was Gulshan Kumar.

The website was very busy until about 10 to 12 years ago. Then for some inexplicable reasons people lost interest & moved away. A great forum it was. Now as you can see the traffic is down to trickle.
Some of them active then are no more.
    Regards
