• Amusing Box Photo

I just saw, on a web site, a photo of a 10-in-one game set for sale online. Here's the URL, as my description may be hard to believe. https://www.mindgames.ca/wooden-game-set-10-in-1
The box showed a picture of the chess board with the chess pieces on it.
But the chess pieces weren't quite set up for a game of chess.
One side of the board had the white pieces on the black squares, and the other side of the board had the black pieces on the white squares.
There was an accompanying photo in the product description showing checkers set up the same way.
While this did help the pieces to contrast with the squares they were standing on, it made it look like the company making the boards had never heard of the games they were used to play.

Most real chess players get (righteously so) upset when they see a picture in which the chess board does not have on the lower right side a white square.

But this is a whole new low for producers of chess sets. They really have not the slightest idea what chess is about.

Personally I think that somebody who violates the noble & royal game of chess in such a horrible way should get whiplashes.

This brings up memories of edgar allan poe's diatribe against chess, which can be read here: (warning, shocking language, not for people with a weak heart) https://www.enotes.com/topics/murders-rue-morgue/etext

Some chess player explained why he could be so horribly wrong about chess, and it is really simple if you think about it: poe simply couldn't play chess.

    That's the only reasonable explanation.

But the ones who set up the chess board on above photo stoop way below that. They must have been total illiterates concerning chess.

This shows us that there is still a lot of work to be done before the whole world is acquainted with an has at least a minimal level of proficiency in the noble & royal game.

That is something that our development aid to poor countries should be used for, so that horrible scenes like the above will be a thing of the past.
