We stayed at an Auxiliary Air Force Base. Although no longer in use,
    here is some info.

Interesting story about the history of Eleuthera. The SOSUS submarine tracking project was highly classified at one time. It consisted of a network of underwater microphones so sensitive that it could detect and track Russian submarines from thousands
of miles away. Apparently the Russians developed a similar capability at some point which resulted in the US Navy changing their sub testing sites to locations that were geographically shielded from acoustic surveillance. One of those locations is
located in the Bahamas east of Andros Island.

The most interesting place for acoustic sub testing is a lake in Idaho.

If you want to do sea trials and other operational testing on a full sized submarine you need an ocean venue. Using the site in the Bahamas keeps test data from leaking out to prying ears.

Interesting! You still need an ocean however to test a full size sub. As an aside, submariners refer to surface ships as "targets". :-)

You can test all day long in the ocean while in non-stealth mode. It's while testing stealth that you need those protected lakes and such.

And since you can't test a full sized sub in a lake, they do the next best thing which is testing in an area of the Bahamas that is sonically shielded from the open ocean (Tongue of the Ocean).

Covered by my "and such". I did see your earlier post. :)
Surely there are systems that require *open* ocean to test, not the TOTO. It's just beyond your and my pay grade to actually know exactly what those system are. Throw some standard props on it, mask it with some additional noise, and they can likely
    test right off our coast!
