Buddy recently got a new fun gun, a Henry lever action rifle in .38 Special/.357 MAG. It's the "X" model, whatever that means, with a side-loading gate and a threaded barrel. He was kind enough to loan it
to me for a week, and I discovered that a suppressor I already own fit
the threaded barrel perfectly and really "hushed" subsonic .38 Special
ammo. Don't have any .357 MAG ammo around. Anyway, recoil feels more
like a .22LR rifle, sound level very low, accurate out to at least 125
yards (longest distance I have available within a few minutes drive of
here), lever action smooth as silk, and entire rifle is typical
high-quality Henry. Rifle looks like this, except this one has been
fitted with a walnut stock and foreend. Standard issue is polymer
furniture. Might be an entry on my wish list. :)

I don't collect guns. I own a handful of firearms I use for informal
target shooting. The rifle depicted in this post isn't mine; I borrowed
it, although I will admit that I'd love to own one. Apparently, the
model I like is hard to find and is selling at a premium over retail,
and even .38 Special ammo is still very expensive.

Bingo!are long gone unless you own a large remote piece of property yourself.
I'm still waiting to see if I get my non-restricted firearms license. I sometimes think a nice lever action like that would be fun to target shoot but doubt I'd use it much unless I joined a gun range in the area. The days of going out into the woods

Heh. Why am I not surprised? According to my Amazon account here's what
comes up for this gun:
"This item cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location. Please
choose a different delivery location."
I can't buy ammo on line ... but a BB gun? Only in Massachusetts.
I had a Daisy that looked a lot like that one back in the day in New
Haven when I was 11 or 12. We had a nice, wooded hill behind the house
where I could set up various informal targets, including balloons.
Never owned a bb gun. At that age I had a single shot .22 that got
lots of rabits and squirrels, and one ground hog which, after
roasting, we all decided was too tough to eat.

I'm still waiting to see if I get my non-restricted firearms license. I sometimes think a nice lever action like that would be fun to target shoot but doubt I'd use it much unless I joined a gun range in the area. The days of going out into the woods
Henry makes some really sweet .22LR caliber lever action rifles, a wide variety of them, and the ammo is a *lot* cheaper than either .357 MAG or

Never owned a bb gun. At that age I had a single shot .22 that got
lots of rabits and squirrels, and one ground hog which, after
roasting, we all decided was too tough to eat.
I've never hunted or shot at an animal on a hunt. I have accompanied
"hunter buddies" on their hunts but somehow I made enough noise
thrashing through the woods to warn the animals, if there were any
around. I have a lightweight 7.62x39 bolt action rifle a couple of
friends like to borrow when they "hunt," but as far as I know, there are
no imaginary notches in its butt.
They must be going after some big squirrels and rabbits, eh?
Hunting is bad, but loaning a guy a rifle to kill a poor, unsuspecting
deer is okay? What an enabler!

"transferred" that rifle. It is the law in some of those northern
states. That is part of Biden's "universal background check". Any
"transfer" is the same, whether it is a sale or a one time loan
Under Federal law, I may loan a firearm to a resident of any State for
temporary use for lawful sporting purposes, if I don't know or have
reasonable cause to believe the person is prohibited from receiving or
possessing firearms under Federal law.
That could get a Massachusetts resident in hot water under state law.
I can only transfer possession, sell or gift a firearm to another
MA resident and only if I have assumed the responsibility to
*confirm* the recipient is not only legally authorized to
receive it but also has shown and provided me with his/her
long gun or LTC permit number.
Haven't done it in a while, so I don't know if the rules have
changed but at one time all the above could be done on-line.
MA wants to know where the guns are and who has them.

resident, I called the Staties there to find out the procedure and was

When I was building my home range in Md I called "The Staties" to see
what I had to do and they told me, "no problem, go for it". Later I
found out they were wrong and I was supposed to get some kind of
permit, zoning waivers and all sorts of stuff. I never did get those
permits but it made me understand you never should get legal advice
from cops. They don't know.
As for your "transfer" of a rifle to a friend, it was illegal. Your
GOP governor vetoed that legislation but the deep blue state
legislature over rode that veto.
BTW just for Gee Whiz info the ATF considers a "transfer" as
“selling, assigning, pledging, leasing, loaning, giving away, or
otherwise disposing of”
