• What is the point of the sprint races again?

    From D Munz@21:1/5 to All on Fri Apr 28 13:31:16 2023
I've completely lost the plot. I thought they were to establish the grid for Sunday's GP but they are doing that on Friday now, right?

So are the sprints just like a bonus feature race between qually and the GP?

Don't get me wrong, I think they are good fun, especially to get out the fans, but they don't seem to fit in with the overall drive to reduce costs.

    Unless I'm not getting it...

YOu're getting it. Under the initial plan, the Sprint race did serve
as the qualifying race for the GP race. Some of the drivers were
unhappy with the Sprint race concept and proposed a revision. Under
the old system, a driver had to drive as hard as they could and risk
their cars in qualifying for a good position in the Sprint race. They
then had to drive as hard as they could and risk their cars again to
get a good position for the GP. Especially for the midfield and back runners, the old system was fraught with risk, with limited or no
    rewards.

Time will tell whether the revised Sprint race format will be
successful. The new format takes some of the pressure off the
midfield teams and back markers, the leading teams will probably press
as hard as they can to do well, in spite of the limited reward.

    All bloody nonsense, IMHO.

Lenny said as much on the Sky feed, likening it to the bogus "definition
    of insanity".

No point at all with this new format.

At least with the 'quali' aspect there was a point to it.

Now just a superfluous gimmick, albeit with some points awarded.

What they're missing is "something" to make the gimmicky short race more interesting.

I'd be happy with things like reverse grids, random pit calls, fake rain etc for the sprint races if a) they don't carry many points and b) they don't directly affect the actual Grand Prix. Though the risk is that the sprints become more exciting than the GP itself which could actually devalue
the GP. A bit like test matches vs twenty:20 cricket.
