Whether a huge success or not, Danica Patrick knows more about racing
and made more insightful commentsthan you could in an entire lifetime.

The article is about commentators being anything BUT vapid.

Yeah, I was sorry to see Hobbs was done after the F1 races moved from Speed to NBCSN. Matchett got better as he went along. Along with Varsha, they made a good trio.

Ooh! I hated Hobbs. Can't really remember Bob Varsha or Matchett.
    Perhaps they weren't noteworthy.

I don't envy Dabica's position. Why Sky decided to go with a former Indycar/NASCAR driver is beyond me. Pandering to an American audience?

But I'm also beginning to find Martin Brundle sounding more and more
like an old curmudgeon. His grid walk is a waste of time although he
still makes a good counterpoint in the booth or when he's doing a track
walk and pointing out details during practice from various corners.

It may have been his accent, but it always seemed to me that Hobbs was
doing the broadcasts after a number of drinks.

I like his insights as a driver, and he clearly seems to pick up on
things that are happening on the track before anyone else.

Danica brought a bit of verve and a different perspective from that of middle-aged white British males, which I think the sport needs. I have
no idea what channel I was watching, as we watch in a local pub that has
access to about half a dozen international channels that carry it, but
each has different core feeds and different attitudes to overdubbing or shutting up (TBH, I only recognise one word in 10, but Robert Kubica
seems like he's a great commentator in his native languge). If I knew,
I'd ask for the Danica one to be given the sound again.

But I'm also beginning to find Martin Brundle sounding more and more

Nice to hear someone say that out loud. I used to love his grid walks,
but now he just seems to be going through the motions. Or having a
motion. Part of that is the flooding of the grid with celebs from fields
that have nothing to do with racing, and they can just get wrecked,
    IMHO.

Under Liberty's direction to expand the fan base, the 'grid walk' has
become a series of celebrity trash interviews.
