• "Wrath of Man"

From trotsky@21:1/5 to All on Fri May 20 05:33:34 2022
I hardly ever see newer movies that I'm really interested in. Enter
Jason Statham who has made umpteen tough guy genre movies, with varying
degrees of success. In this movie, which apparently is a remake of a
French movie, he plays a tough guy too, but not like I've ever seen him
before. I had to wonder what a very competent director, Guy Ritchie,
could do with him. Quite a bit. The movie begins with him getting
hired by and armored car company. He doesn't speak much, and seems
somewhat mysterious. He gives his name as "Hill" but they refer to him
as "H" which reminded me a little of Clint's Man with No Name character
which in itself is interesting, since Clint's son Scott Eastwood has a
pivotal role in the movie. Now a movie about an armored car heist
sounds like something we've seen before, but not in this way. Early on
you are given hints that Statham's character has a revenge motif, and as
the movie unfolds in a somewhat non-linear fashion, you find out the
whole story. Eventually Statham exacts his revenge, as the title tells
you, but even that is a little different than anything I'd seen before.

The directing by Ritchie is great, but different in that this is played completely straight, and all his other movies have a whimsical quality
to them. Since he cowrote the script this was obviously planned. I
didn't know if I'd like this movie but I really did, and may watch it
again to pick up on stuff I missed. But even if I don't I'll definitely
seek out the original to see how it compares.

Ah, I must have missed that. I didn't know "substance" was a thing you

Yes, iirc I've seen pretty much all his stuff. For me, this one came up feeling, though stylish, short on what it seemed to promise.

Are you a fan of Guy Ritchie?  He's got a pretty fair body of work and
this was different than any of his other movies that I've seen.  If
you don't give a shit that's your prerogative, but you seem to have
    morphed into moviepiglet.

Yes, iirc I've seen pretty much all his stuff.  For me, this one came up feeling, though stylish, short on what it seemed to promise.

To me it was the only movie of his that seemed somewhat cold and
detached. I'm not sure what was going on with that. He used Statham
better than any other director in my opinion, though. The cast was
really well chosen. But whatever, it seems like intelligent dialogue on
social media is largely dead. C'est la vie.
