I'm sticking with my position that the first EVIL DEAD film was not
meant to be comedic or slapstick. It may look that way today due to its
low budget and being rough around the edges.

I totally agree. Sam Raimi's budget was indeed very small, so they
could not afford to use realistic gore effects in all scenes.
It is pure horror, though.
