The Ig Nobel Prizes - *not* to be confused with the far-better known
Nobel Prizes - apparently aim at recognizing scientific achievements
that are unusual or funny.
One of the discoveries receiving an Ig Nobel Prize this year is the fact
that some mammals can breathe through their anuses! It would appear that
humans are among the mammals that have this ability because the
discoverers felt this new discovery would aid some patients in getting
oxygen in certain cases that were seen during Covid.

I have to admit that this ranks as an unusual discovery. I'm curious
what made these scientists even arrive at a hypothesis that this might
be possible. It would never have occurred to me! I also wonder how this
could possibly work given the entire different functions of an anus and
the respiratory system. I'm afraid my knowledge of human anatomy is
rudimentary at best....
