Of course, what the UK news reports said was that it was GP's surgery,
but apparently, in the US, surgery is not used in the context of premises
used by a doctor for consultations, etc. (A patient going into hospital
for surgery is understood.)
Then there is the concept of an MP's surgery, where MPs can meet their constituents to discuss problems. When the MP Jo Cox was murdered at a
surgery back in 2016, Lynne Murphy on her Separated by a Common Language
blog said that many American friends asked her what that meant.
