An informative article that makes iwi claims they're needed to fix thing a weak argument! It was a once in 500 year event apparently.

For the ng political dim bulb it's not about politics so before you start blaming the party you hate remember Goff had a lot of years to do thing before being shot of to London to piss off the Brits :)

There have been many large scale flooding events in Auckland such as this one in 1935: https://www.facebook.com/OldAuckCity/photos/fort-lane-mt-eden-rd-shops-1935torrential-rain-in-auckland-streets-flooded-and-d/992304000822456/?paipv=0&eav=AfbPFJ-

However now many streams have been converted to unbuffered culverts, fed by vast impermeable catchments.

One in 200 year events do tend to change attitudes to what is now
needed - anyone with a house that was flooded will dread the next
insurance bill, and some may not be worth rebuilding. With climate
change, we should perhaps have anticipated more extreme evetns, but
until they happen, it can be hard to convince some to agree to rates
being increased to pay for the work. Is that what you are now
proposing, John? Houses being flooded in recent rain is of course not restricted to Auckland . . .

Again you're let down by your total lack of comprehension Rich! I make no proposals except maybe we start looking at climate change honestly! There is enough evidence to suggest the UN scientists are using badly flawed models to predict climate changes,
so redoing the program to include more of the events that can affect the climate would be good. What do you suggest apart from the obviously useless proposals you usualy push?

The other factor is one of channelling the water. On a green suface the
water tends to "trickle" it way down. This takes time and the "surge" front
    to wide.

Now its from the down pipes and into the streets stormwater system where iot meets all the other similar flows. Big surge.

We also do not seem to agree on what the rivers flood plain is until it shows us. The river will use the flood plain and not fundutmental attitude will change things.

Flood plains tend to be flat and beside rivers/water. The problem is they make perfect places for farming (lots of fertile land) and for building city's :)
