I used pan for years but it stopped working. So I removed
it (Kubuntu Linux) and reinstalled it. I typed in the
server name (eternal-september.org), logged in. I then
had a blank page. I typed in "fortran" top left, which used
to get me a list of Fortran groups, but now, no reaction.
What do I do to reactivate pan?

What version of Pan?
I am using 0.154
Searching for fortran reveals 17 groups in the Other Groups list.
I presume you are typing fortran without the quotes.
Are any other newsgroups available?
e.g. start typing alt. in the search box top left and those groups should
appear in the Other Groups list.
Eternal-September can be temperamental at times and be off-line.
Have you tried another news server?
get the latest version.
And no matter what I type in, I get no response as I used to.
No, I don't use quotes.
I have been on eternal-september for years and never had
problems with it. When pan stopped working, about a year or two
ago, I used Thunderbird but I don't like it much, and now it
is asking me to donate. I can't seem to get rid of the "Donate"
page.

Did you use auth and enabled "always authenticate"?
Are the eternal-september groups visible?
in, same behaviour.

Delete the pan2 directory/folder in your home directory. Then restart PAN
to create a new user and cache. Usually your home directory is /home/YOURUSERNAME on your disk drive.

Glad to hear it.
I remember it was possible to forever ignore a
particular author. I right clicked the person I want
to avoid now, but it seems that I am now only able
to ignore the thread, not the author. How do I do
it now -or is it not possible any longer?
