• Apple Plans to Bring Back the iPhone SE 4

From badgolferman@21:1/5 to All on Tue Feb 28 14:30:29 2023
Apple is apparently back in the business of making cheap[er] iPhones in
its SE lineup, barely a month after analysts thought Apple had canceled
    work on the SE 4.

Noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo tweeted Monday that Apple is jumping
back in the saddle with the iPhone SE 4 after initially canceling plans
to offer a new phone in its line of lower-end devices. This new, lower
end and somewhat cheaper phone should be available sometime in 2024.

The new iPhone SE will supposedly come with a 6.1-inch OLED display
instead of the previous versions’ LED screen. It’s a major step up from previous versions of the phone, which sported a 4.7-inch frame. It’s
the same size screen as the iPhone 14, so it may drop one of the
biggest complaints with the last version of the SE.

But the news also offers an interesting look at Apple’s attempt to
bring its 5G connectivity in-house. According to Kuo, that upcoming
device will incorporate a 5G baseband chip designed by Apple itself.
That 5G capability will be slightly limited, as Kuo wrote that Apple’s
own chip only supports sub-6 GHz frequencies.

“The significant decline in Qualcomm’s Apple orders in the foreseeable future is a foregone conclusion,” the Apple analyst wrote.

people are complaining about the best feature the latest SE? i use a
SE 2nd gen specifically because of it's fairly small size.

Because of that the battery capacity is rather limited compared to the
bigger brothers and sisters. My wife bought her SE2020 exactly because
    of the form factor.

I still prefer minis. Is Apple bringing those back?

Color me: shocked! SHOCKED, I TELL YOU!! : D Meanwhile, Apple has a
historical record of only refreshing the cheap option iPhone every few
years, yet over and over again gullible people are easily fooled into
believing "sales are worse than expected" (by analysts who clearly don't
know Apple's actual plans) and that Apple has supposedly "canceled" the
line during years where no refresh occurs. How many times will gullible
people fall for these analysts clickbait bullshit?

i got 6 years out of my 5S, my first smartphone. i probably could have
got another year out of it but i really wanted to use contactless
payments and the 5S couldn't do it. i expect to get the same use out of
the SE 2nd gen. hopefully there will be something comparable in size
    available 4-5 years from now.

This is good news. I think that the fear Apple had is that if they make
their low-end phones too good then it will cannibalize sales of their
high-end models. But by not having an entry level model they lose out on potential services revenue. You really can't sell a $400 phone with an
LCD screen anymore so moving to OLED was a given.

It's also a good way for them to test out their 5G modem. As long as it supports C band then the lack of mmWave is not a big issue, after all,
mmWave isn't supported on the iPhone 12, 13, 14 sold outside the U.S..

This new SE is really just like an 11 but with 5G and OLED. I suspect
that they'll design it to use much of the existing tooling. The SE4 was predicted a while ago, I didn't even realize that it had ever been put
    on hold.

it was never a given, mainly because the demographic doesn't care about
    such things.

If Apple can put their first generation modem into an iPhone at any time
before the Qualcomm patents expire (circa 2029'ish?) then that's neat.

Apple's first generation modem won't be able to compete with whatever generation Qualcomm and Samsung are on (are they on their fifth now?).

But it buys Apple's 5G modem design team time because at least their first generation chip will be used in something and they can see how it works.
