R-Comp Interactive is pleased to announce the release of a new OS update
for the ARMbook laptop (known affectionately as ARMbok to his friends).
First up is version 1.19 of the main laptop software. This is the program which manages all the RISC OS features of the laptop, such as battery management, screen brightness control, auto-networking, updates and cmos
etc. The new version includes:
Support for the new cmos size used by newer OS ROMs (backwards
compatible for old ROMs)
Improvements to auto-networking. Can now automatically trigger
events such as sharing drives when network connection is made -
useful for home networking.
Improvements to the built in Screen Locking feature to
incorporate improvements from latest !LockScreen builds
For those unfamiliar with the "auto networking" feature mentioned above,
it is a cool feature of the ARMbook which allows it to bring up RISC OS networking automatically, the moment a network cable is plugged in. This
means that you can use the laptop without networking (useful when "out and about"), and simply connect networking on-the-fly. The software will take
it from there.
This is also very handy when used with wifi adapters - once they make a connection to a known wifi network, ARMbook will auto-config itself
dynamically - no restarts/reboots required!
Next up is a new build of the ARMbook operating system. The main change
is support for Linux date/time format. This allows RISC OS and Linux to
share the real time clock, and maintain correct date/time across operating systems. We found that Linux was using a different start date when
controlling the clock compared to "RISC OS standard", so the ARMbook now automatically compensates so that the two operating systems are kept in
step. Naturally this makes going back'n'forth between RISC OS and Linux
much better.
Additionally, some of the latest updates to RISC OS itself have made their
way in, such as improvements to the desktop interface allowing copy/paste
in icons, and drag'n'drop.
All in all, it makes for a nice update for the machines.
If you're still thinking about ARMbo(o)k, why not come and meet him at the
SW Show this weekend - we'll have laptops for you to try, and (some) stock
for sale.
Best wishes,
Andrew
