Thunderbird is free. It's really a mail client with a newsgroup
interface built in.

Currently the two very good, and well supported Usenet clients available for macOS are:
Usenapp<https://www.usenapp.com>
and
Hogwasher<https://www.asar.com/hogwasher.html>
Neither are free. However, both provide good support, and regular free updates.

For text-based newsgroups, such as this one, I use Thunderbird.
For binary newsgroups, I use Unison. Version 2.1.9 still
working fine with 10.14.6 (which is "as far" as this 2018
Mini will ever go...)

Another vote for Hogwasher. Have used Thoth, Unison, Thunderbird (WAY back in the day). Kept coming back to the Hog.
Well, I still miss Thoth. Hogwasher proofed to be very reliable, easy to use and is well supported. Unison is not really supported, Thunderbird was not my choice for several reasons.

I miss Thoth too. It was the last of the Newswatcher children, and I had used Newswatcher, MT-Newswatcher and finally Thoth since the mid-nineties. It took some learning and getting used to, but Hogwasher is a fine substitute for me.

The problem with Thoth was always the developer, who came off as a
petulant asshole many times over through the years.

Early versions of his app stated they were based on Newswatcher. After
people asked him about the licensing issue that presented since
Newswatcher code was not public domain and couldn't be used in
commercial apps, he turned around and insisted Thoth *wasn't* based on Newswatcher but contained "only public domain code". It was then pointed
out that none of the code from Newswatcher was public domain, so he
turned around and claimed Thoth contained *no* Newswatcher code
whatsoever.
As I recall, he also yanked support out from under Thoth users several
times through the years, blaming users for not buying enough copies of
the app.
No thanks.
