• Error 00240100, Onboard XGA-2 fails on Model 9556-DE9 serial no.: 55-0W

From Carsten Lyng@21:1/5 to All on Wed Mar 29 00:48:36 2023
When the machine starts, I get this error code 00240100
and the machine boots into the Ref / diagnostic screen.

When I run diagnostics on the machine, the onboard XGA-2 is fails the test.
( have the unit serviced )

I´am not able to boot to dos, because the machine boots to the Ref / Diagnostics screen.

There are a few screen artifacts, when the system is power on, but only in a second or so.
Is there any way to disable the onboard XGA-2 and use another graphics card in one of the MCA slots ?. (XGA-2 perhaps ? )

It is a nice SLC3 planar, and it would be great if the machine could be used, even it has got problems with the onboard XGA-2

The planar is.: FRU P/N 65G9714

    2. Display (any type)

Is there any way to disable the onboard XGA-2

Not that I know of, the onboard XGA-2 will be tested during POST, before
    any slot mounted adapter.

MAJ Tom, can he hit F1 to boot past the error, then continue to boot
    with an XGA-2 adapter?

Looking at XGA-2 errors, the HMM mentions the 240x series, but...
    FALSE XGA-2 ERROR CODE 02581800 OR 024318XX ON PS/2
    ** 02581800 error (System board XGA-2 9556/57)
    ** 024318XX error (XGA-2 Display Adapter)

This isn't your problem [it would be nice if it was, though!]

Can you change the monitor and cable? We do forlorn hopes here all the
    time...

    Screen artifacts? Lines? Characters?

Can you give us the advanced diagnostics error code [not that it fixes anything]?

"XGA-2 graphics enabled with ISO 9241-3 when coupled with compliant
    display and operating system"

After repeated "Beatings By Helga" (TM), my memory is kaotic, but some
snippets that XGA-2 prefers 95xx monitors. This does not mean 85xx
monitors won't work, but the 95xx support a wider range of resolutions.
This by itself is not the smoking gun, but IBM developed the monitor ID function where the very limited circuitry [two resistors?] is in the
    monitor.

Are you using a CRT or LED monitor? CRT will possumbly have the monitor ID.

    Hi Louis,

Let´s keep up the hope up:-)

The arifacts are small blue dots in the top of the screen, I will see if i can take a picture of them
I´am using a LED monitor at the moment, I can borrow a CRT monitor and VGA cable from a friend, and
    try with that one.
Will also run the diagnostics on the machine, and give you the error codes.

Can also try with a XGA-2 card from one of my other machines, and see if I can make it boot to dos by
    pressing F1.

I will see if I get time for it later, or tomorrow.

    Thanks for the help
    /Carsten

The LED monitor >should< handle the XGA-2 especially during POST where
the video is 640x480 @60Hz. I have used a 15" HP LED monitor on a Model
90's planar XGA, and I'm sure over the years, many folks have used XGA-2
    with a LED monitor.

The dots at the top of the screen -MAY- provide a clue on the cause.
After repeated BBH®, I have DIMM memories of screen trash by a failing component. This is prior to the O/S loading, so it's doubtful the
artifacts are due to software drivers.

I surfed a bit, and it seems there was only one version of SurePath BIOS
for the SLC3. At this point, I'm not klar -IF- the SLC3 system BIOS is
in a EEPROM or EPROM. SurePath has been associated with FLASH-based
systems which accept BIOS updates via an update diskette.

27C2048 is an OTP PLCC. Though I also see a UV windowed one.

I could not try with a CRT monitor, my friends monitor is broken,
I used a new VGA cable and my LED monitor, but did not work, same error / beep code one long beep and two small
The error code from the diagnostics is.: 02580400, have the unit serviced.

Have also tried with a XGA-2 card in the different MCA slots, but still get the error code,
when system is powered on. Unable to boot to dos when pressing F1,
have tried with a standart DOS boot disk...

    Video might have failed.
Ensure that you are using diagnostic files XGAANI.DGS and XGAPNI.DGS dated 03/06/93 or later
before you replace any FRUs. Earlier files cause erroneous errors.
