Today, here, I see 11 more messages that read to me as mainly
question marks (more than 80% of characters).
I'm not sure I'm really interested, but is there an easy setting in
Forte that would show me the underlying heiroglyphics or whatever?

There are more new messages of that ilk today.
Today, set a new Kill filter. Forte Agent lets me set up a filter:
Subject:{/?/?/?/?}
which successfully does detect today's garbage.
I don't know if that detects 4 consecutive '?' or any presence of
four of them. For the time being, I set Action to 'Mark as Read'
instead of immediately deleting.
Various accounts at gmail are identified as source of every
message. I don't know how to protest there, or if that would
be effective. New gmail accounts apparently are easy to get.
