• DOS 6.22 emacs 19.34 won't start

From vjp2.at@at.BioStrategist.dot.dot.co@21:1/5 to All on Thu Jun 22 20:07:22 2023
I had it running and then I did some repartitioning
    and it now doesn't start

I may have changed config.sys or autoexec options
    cwsdpmi is in emacs\bin

    I feel so stupid

Was it that hard to get running in your environment? If you are right
that repartitioning was the cause, that would presumably be due to
corruption of some needed file. It could also be that a whole file
got lost somewhere it can be recovered, but that's not something I
recommend for anybody, it's painful. And just because it starts, that
doesn't guarantee other files that only get used later are uncorrupted.

In such cases, reinstalling is time-consuming but straightforward.

I may have changed config.sys or autoexec options

To diagnose, we would need error messages from Emacs or DOS if there
were any, and also the content of the files you suspect were changed.

    I feel so stupid

Please don't. I mean it's a natural feeling, but computers do that to
all of us sooner or later, and more than once. Learn to get over it
    quickly. :-)

Much Obliged for your kind reply

emacs --version or --help gives output
    but just emacs
gives a blank line then the DOS prompt

Maybe I got the wrong version (win vs dos)??
THey have moved around since i did this a few months ago

I kept changing my Windows and Linux versions/distros
but I didn't touch DOS.. which is why it seems strange

I had used 22 or 25 and now tried 19.34
which worked on my original (not available) machine
(which I have been trying to replicate)

THe zip file just had everything in place, incl cwsdpmi

The reason I wnet to 19.34 was the newer version (the one that had previously worked)
was hanging. And it may be something with himem or cwsdpmi although I think
I tried all the permutations to no avail. So maybe I played with autoexec/config the wrong way. I am trying to get the CD and USB drivers working. And I found out I had the wrong version of ansi.sys (rel minor but fixed it)
