• To Ubuntu: fix your Snaps if you want people to use them

Seriously, the Snap version is barely functional if you want to use
Proton despite Canonical focusing on Proton working properly.

Haven't used Snap stuff. Even on Ubuntu, I still use aptitude to install software.

I see OBS Studio at the "Snap Store", for example, but I loaded it
    (package "obs-studio") from aptitude.

I think you get a several Snaps installed automatically with Ubunutu. Have you gone to a terminal and ran "snap list" (without the quotes)?

    Here's what I see:

    % snap list
    Name Version Rev Tracking Publisher Notes bare 1.0 5 latest/stable canonical✓ base core18 20231027 2812 latest/stable canonical✓ base core20 20231123 2105 latest/stable canonical✓ base core22 20231123 1033 latest/stable canonical✓ base gnome-3-34-1804 0+git.3556cb3 93 latest/stable/… canonical✓ - gnome-3-38-2004 0+git.efb213a 143 latest/stable canonical✓ - gnome-42-2204 0+git.ff35a85 141 latest/stable canonical✓ - gtk-common-themes 0.1-81-g442e511 1535 latest/stable/… canonical✓ - snap-store 41.3-71-g709398e 959 latest/stable/… canonical✓ - snapd 2.61.1 20671 latest/stable canonical✓ snapd

I don't use Gnome, so it's taking up space. But the installed software (a lot of it) is taking up only half of a 56G partition.

For a desktop, I like the combination of Fluxbox plus some of the services and apps from Xfce.

Yeah, I even checked if it said "broken" next to the Snap package in the
list. Everything, apparently, was functioning correctly even though it
wasn't. Considering how I had just installed the distribution the
previous day and how little time it takes to just install a different
one, I didn't bother trying to find a fix and just went with Mint which
    works fine.

Not as much there as I would have expected there would be. I thought Firefox and Thunderbird were a couple that used Snap, but maybe not?

Actually, Firefox and Thunderbird in the latest Ubuntu are indeed Snaps.

Regardless, I find the Snap selection to be rather paltry in comparison
to Flatpak and the Snaps themselves to be noticeably slower, even though
it's much better than it used to be. Still, the mere fact that Steam
didn't work as intended with Windows compatibility made it fairly
useless for what I intend to do. The Steam Flatpak, meanwhile, is
spectacular even for the Windows games I tried. Even better, Linux Mint
21.3 does a good job of differentiating the Flatpak version of Steam
    from the .deb one.

I kind of guessed that. I don't think most people would even think about it. Just use the default. (Maybe I'm wrong about that.) I do know that those at Linux Mint have chosen to make a deal with Mozilla instead of using the Firefox Snap and have disabled Snaps by default. They don't like the fact that the Snap Store is a closed (proprietary) site.

Its proprietary nature wouldn't bother so much if it were any good.
However, Canonical has shown that its implementation of the same idea as
    that of Flatpak is lacking.
