A bit late, but I learning GNU Smalltalk too.
It may look like an heresy, but I prefer to use a text editor
instead of a Smalltalk IDE. GTK and SDL bindings look
interesting for RAD.
It's a pity the GNU Smalltalk team didn't release the new version.
The 3.2.91 version fixed most bugs making gst-browser crash
and others like math bugs.
Most distros are stuck with gst 3.2.5, which is utterly broken.

Just wanted to say "hello", I can't realy help, but I'm also trying to
learn Smalltalk. I actually gravitated towards Pharo, it looks like the
most maintained and performant implementation, but if I understand
correctly GNU Smalltalk is good for writting scripts.
