"Add a place" (i.e. "Add a visit") not working in Google Maps Timeline

I am creating records of trips I took long before I even had a
cellphone, let alone long before Google Maps and Google Maps Timeline
existed.
I have successfully done this many, many timea. I have many, many days
worth -- many, many *weeks* worth! -- of such maps.
Today, suddenly the "Add a place" button and the "+" button are not
responding to mouse clicks. (They did respond yesterday.)
