• Adding Christmas decorations to photo

From Dave@21:1/5 to All on Sun Dec 1 16:31:26 2019
    All,

New to GIMP 2.8.22 (Ubuntu). I'm able to do some basic things like
correct perspective, touch up blemishes, etc. Now I need to add some
Christmas decorations to a photo. The decorations are a wreath on a
door, and garland on the two columns surrounding the door. Problem is I
really don't know where to begin. I could use some help. Pointers to
    articles would be fine.

P.S. Tried to register with GIMP Users, but it did not ask for a
password, until I want to log in. Still waiting to get that fixed. This
is why I really don't care for web support.

    Thanks,
    Dave

Probably several approaches here, no expert myself, but have you looked into working with layers?

Yes. I opened the main photo, the opened the photo I want to add as a
layer. The I finally figured out how to re-scale it and then move it.
That was for a wreath. No clue how to add garlands.

    Dave.

Are you planing to draw the wreath and garland? Or do you have
pictures of them you want to add in?

If the latter, are they already separated out, or will you have to
cut them from another picture? And after you have them stand-alone,
will you have to resize them?

How realistic will it have to look? For instance, will shadows be
required? Will the highlighting have to match the direction of the
    light in your photo?

    Both are photos

The wreath and garland are already cut out and have an invisible background.

As realistic as possible, without spending a lot of time.
