Fueled by the obstinate inertia of the Chinese Communist Party — which would view backtracking on policy it has so publicly fully committed to
as an unacceptable loss of face (an important and often misunderstood
concept in Asian culture) — the government’s brutal “Zero COVID” policy
runs full steam ahead.
The resulting images — the handful that leak out of China’s infamous internet firewall — shock the conscience. Science fiction isn’t so imaginative in its depictions of futuristic dystopia.

Xi has fucked-up BADLY with his hopeless "Zero Covid"
approach. It is doing serious harm to the industrial
output and the citizens - well 'proletariat/serfs' -
are suffering considerably.
HOWEVER ... it is also an opportunity for Xi to
insinuate far more State POWER over said citizens
at every level. Dissident types are uncovered,
tagged and dealt with. Covid is the excuse, but ....
IF Xi decides to pursue his imperial ambitions he
will get a lot less internal resistance now than
he would have pre-Covid. The proletariat is now
in its proper, groveling, posture and even huge
war losses would not weaken Xi's power.
So, there's more than one way to look at this.

No wonder the people of Taiwan are willing to go to war to protect their relative freedom from communist tyranny.

The PRC is *not* the lifestyle you want (ok, perhaps
'mighty wannabe' would love it in an S&M way ...)
Unfortunately the people of Hong Kong have discovered
this very recently - the PRC 'Stasi' are on them in
every direction and dimension. They became slaves,
indeed SOLD OUT by their own leaders and the UK was
in NO position anymore to defend them.
In Taiwan it would be a totalitarian bloodbath straight
out of Vlad The Impaler's handbook.
Taiwan really was NOT a 'free' country in the Chiang
years - almost as bad as the PRC - but they got past
that and have been living much better lives for quite
awhile now.
That could SUDDENLY go away - a lot of
big bangs and half a million PRC solders arriving by
landing craft and parachute overnight. A real "Red
Dawn". (though I expect an air/sea blockade first
designed to intimidate commercial traffic)
In a way I hope they've quietly built a few big nukes
and high-speed missiles to deliver them westward. That
way they can at least avenge themselves ... mid-sized
H-bombs would not at all be beyond their tech/industrial
capabilities. 200kt could make any big PRC city unlivable.
And the USA/EU ... sorry, but we've got too many problems
and too little money (and resolve). We can't help them
very much if push really does come to shove. Alas Xi KNOWS
this, likely helped engineer it.

I visited Taiwan in 1963 (at age 12) when the currency still featured depictions of Chiang Kai-Shek on paper bills. My father worked for the
ONI and was a guest of the police chief of Taipei. He was at a banquet where live monkeys had their skulls cracked open so diners could be
served live monkey brains. It was considered an insult to the host to
not eat the monkey brains. The anti-communism of the Taiwanese people
was palpable.

Taiwan could launch hyper-sonic missiles at the Three Gorges Dam and
wipe out some 130 million Chinese and a lot of the industrial base of
China in a matter of hours.
