• UNREAL New Images Emerge From Chinese 'Zero COVID' Techno-Hell

Fueled by the obstinate inertia of the Chinese Communist Party — which
would view backtracking on policy it has so publicly fully committed to
as an unacceptable loss of face (an important and often misunderstood
concept in Asian culture) — the government’s brutal “Zero COVID” policy runs full steam ahead.

The resulting images — the handful that leak out of China’s infamous internet firewall — shock the conscience. Science fiction isn’t so imaginative in its depictions of futuristic dystopia.

Xi has fucked-up BADLY with his hopeless "Zero Covid"
approach. It is doing serious harm to the industrial
output and the citizens - well 'proletariat/serfs' -
    are suffering considerably.

HOWEVER ... it is also an opportunity for Xi to
insinuate far more State POWER over said citizens
at every level. Dissident types are uncovered,
tagged and dealt with. Covid is the excuse, but ....

IF Xi decides to pursue his imperial ambitions he
will get a lot less internal resistance now than
he would have pre-Covid. The proletariat is now
in its proper, groveling, posture and even huge
war losses would not weaken Xi's power.

So, there's more than one way to look at this.

The PRC is *not* the lifestyle you want (ok, perhaps
'mighty wannabe' would love it in an S&M way ...)

Unfortunately the people of Hong Kong have discovered
this very recently - the PRC 'Stasi' are on them in
every direction and dimension. They became slaves,
indeed SOLD OUT by their own leaders and the UK was
in NO position anymore to defend them.

In Taiwan it would be a totalitarian bloodbath straight
out of Vlad The Impaler's handbook.

Taiwan really was NOT a 'free' country in the Chiang
years - almost as bad as the PRC - but they got past
that and have been living much better lives for quite
awhile now. That could SUDDENLY go away - a lot of
big bangs and half a million PRC solders arriving by
landing craft and parachute overnight. A real "Red
Dawn". (though I expect an air/sea blockade first
    designed to intimidate commercial traffic)

In a way I hope they've quietly built a few big nukes
and high-speed missiles to deliver them westward. That
way they can at least avenge themselves ... mid-sized
H-bombs would not at all be beyond their tech/industrial
capabilities. 200kt could make any big PRC city unlivable.

And the USA/EU ... sorry, but we've got too many problems
and too little money (and resolve). We can't help them
very much if push really does come to shove. Alas Xi KNOWS
    this, likely helped engineer it.

I visited Taiwan in 1963 (at age 12) when the currency still featured depictions of Chiang Kai-Shek on paper bills.  My father worked for the

served live monkey brains.  It was considered an insult to the host to
not eat the monkey brains.  The anti-communism of the Taiwanese people
    was palpable.

The monkey-brain thing was always weird ... but Chinese
culture has always proceeded from a different base, in
a different direction/reality. For the west it's always
been like dealing with space aliens to a degree. Amazing
how differently the same species can think. If we ever DO
meet space aliens, well, that movie "Arrival" doesn't
even begin to cover it ............

I'm SURE the anti-communism sentiment was very high in
the 1960s. Good. Smart. However Chaing was as equally
controlling as the Coms in its own way.

Hmm ... 1960s, 12 years, were there young girls sucking
yer dick under the table ?

No, you really shouldn't answer that ! :-)

That could SUDDENLY go away - a lot of

wipe out some 130 million Chinese and a lot of the industrial base of

Taiwan, even without nukes, COULD get a lot of revenge.
Hypersonics would be useful, but it probably wouldn't
even require those. Targeting key infrastructure it
could do a LOT of damage.

If it HAS a few nukes then 100 times the revenge. Xi
should bear that in mind. Taiwan has felt itself under
deadly threat since the 1940s. That's a LOT of motivation
to sneakily build a small nuke inventory. They CAN, and
    thus likely HAVE.

And the USA/EU ... sorry, but we've got too many problems

    https://www.rt.com/news/567286-taipei-elects-chiang-kai-shek-descendant/

The great-grandson of Taiwan’s former authoritarian leader Chiang
Kai-shek has emerged as a rising star in the country’s nationalist
Kuomintang (KMT) party, winning election as mayor of Taipei.

Chiang Wan-an, who at 43 became the youngest mayor in the capital city’s history, declared victory on Saturday night after his two rivals in a
three-way race conceded defeat. The US-educated corporate lawyer, who
returned to Taiwan in 2013 to pursue politics, won 42.3% of the votes.
His nearest opponent, Chen Shih-chung of Taiwan’s ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), took 31.9%.

The mayorship of Taipei has been a springboard to Taiwan’s presidency in recent decades. In fact, each of the past four Taiwanese presidents,
including current leader Tsai Ing-wen, was mayor of the country’s
capital city before taking the national reins.

Chiang also has family history on his side. He is the great-grandson of
the man who ruled Taiwan for more than 25 years after fleeing to the
island in 1949 following the defeat of the nationalists by communist
forces in the Chinese Civil War. The mayor-elect’s grandfather, Chiang Ching-kuo, continued the family political dynasty as president from 1978
to 1988. Chiang Kai-shek and Chiang Ching-kuo both ruled until dying in
    office.
