• BBS's with MS-DOS software?

Any BBS's out there with lots of MS-DOS utilities and so forth? Sometimes it's easier to download things to this 486 of mine using my wifimodem than running compactflash cards all over the house.

I raided Tiny's and... something else... I forget who now, and also looked
over some SIMTEL images that are out there. I found the easiest option was file sharing, you might be able to manage SMB1 but I never got that to work
at any stage with DOS. There are NFS clients out there though that'll work with a minimum of fuss, and you can still get NFS servers for linux variants.

Try 20-4-BEERS, lots of ancient MS-DOS stuff I frequently evaluate, also directly from DOS via MTCP's supported telnet terminals.

2oFB has a huge archive of everything retro software. The localZzZ File Conference has all the basic MS-DOS tools and utils, plus a bit m0re... and theres tons of other conferences for other retro platforms.

I dug out my tape drive the other day, which was originally intercepted from being thrown away from a school in the early 2000s. Linux still, of course, was happy to work with it but after pulling the first few filenames out of the tape it went back into fweet fwoot fweet mode and could do no more. Then it wouldn't read the next tape, or the next one. They were all stored together so I put it down to bit rot... until I went to pack the drive away and found its belt lying on the bench underneath. It's never what you think will get you that gets you :(

I don't have any labels other than the outer, so I'm not sure but T3 rings a bell for some reason. I need to dig out the drive and hook it up to my linux machine and see if I can even read the tape; it is that old.

My drive didn't last that long. It lost the end of tape sensor... being an optical sensor and a small hole in the tape. I cleaned it up a couple of times, and rewound a few tapes, but in the end it just became unviable. No idea what I did with the tapes themselves now.

At different times, my tapes did different duties. Backups of course, and
after some time I found a door that would let you use a tape as a file area.. of course it had latency in retrieving the file for download, but being able
to have a slab of monolithic data was handy, and could free up drive space.

I only ever had SCSI in the Apple II world, and there were plenty of cheapish drives kicking around, like the ol' Archive Viper but I could never get them
to talk to any of the available software.

    Hi, Spec.

I imagine it must make a hell of a bang when it hits the end of a tape :\

That sounds useful but I have so many questions... Did it tell the user their download would start in X minutes? How many times did some random guy downloading "Roger's disk utility" wake you up in the middle of the night? Does that amount of tape reuse throw muck all over the end of tape sensor? ;)

I only ever had SCSI in the Apple II world, and there were plenty of cheapish drives kicking around, like the ol' Archive Viper but I could never get them to talk to any of the available software.

Ah, yes. This is one of the things I'd forgotten about retro computing until I returned to it. That and the complete lack of "common" connectors across systems. Or they have common connectors like a serial port but they want 7e2 and expect you to do something jazzy like trigger the ring indicator pin before they will talk to you... I hated the idea of USB when it came along but we really are spoiled these days!

Ahh no actually. Unlike a compact cassette the tapes are only held on by friction so they just unspooled and wrapped around the drive spool.

That sounds useful but I have so many questions... Did it tell the user their download would start in X minutes? How many times did some random guy downloading "Roger's disk utility" wake you up in the middle of the night? Does that amount of tape reuse throw muck all over the end of tape sensor? ;)

It threw out a message saying it was recovering the file from the tape sans
any kind of time. For what it was it was reasonably quick, a bit slow
getting itself lined up for random access but the transfer was quick enough
to not be a big issue. And no, it didn't seem to worry the drive at all. Did
it add to the drives early exit for the pearly gates one backup cycle... maybe.. but not noticably.

I was only ever woken up by the BBS for about the first 3 days. I left the monitor on, ATM1 all the bells and whistles. After three days, being an apprentice that needed to get to work for 7am I turned it all off and got
    some more sleep. :)

The ones I had, you could unscrew the metal base plate, respool the tape getting a bit of tension on it and then reassemble. It was a little time consuming though, and after it transition from the odd occurence to semi-regular I retired the drive.

I started with FrontDoor and ended up moving to BinkleyTerm. I think it
was the hassle of having to compile a BT-compatible binary nodelist for
Maximus, my BBS software, and a FD nodelist -- the things we did for a
couple of dozen KB back then!

I also had plans on moving the BBS to OS/2, and there were BinkleyTerm,
Maximus and Squish packages native to OS/2, which made the switch easy.

I started with Telegard, moved to Maximus, then went private for a time,
    and re-emerged on Synchronet 3.x.

I'm not sure if I can call today's Internet mature. Technologies and capabilities are for sure mind blowing comparint to what we had in the 90s.

But content wise? Back then it was all about content to be distributed as it is. before Google it was a bit of a challenge to find everything but still diversity of content was exceptional beyond measure.

Now it's all about milking on your attention while there is actually little valuable content in most popular web traffic jams you can encounter.
