have to figure out how to use my SD2EIC solution to backup 5.25"s fro the 1541 drive to my SDCard... I wanna get all 200 disks backed up.
You might have to move to a Pi1541 for at least some of those disks, though. The SD2IEC that I have worked great, but I kept running into problems with some stuff. So I moved to a Pi1541 and I've had no
problems with it on my C64 and Plus/4.
I still keep real drives around. I have a 1541-II set to device 9, on my Plus/4-C64 setup. But for "normal" usage, I always use floppy emulators now.
I think the only system that I have that is dependent on 5.25" diskettes is my Kaypro "1". But I don't use it very often.
Ahhhhh - yea, a Pi1541 fully emulates the 1541 right?? Appreciate the heads up that there might be some issues using a SD2IEC - do you
remember the process you used w/ an SD2IEC? I would prefer to copy the disks byte-for-byte/file-for-file rather than creating a .d64 (or other) image... either will work for my needs but good things to think about -
I hope I don't have to buy new hardware but understand.
If you are copying non copy protected disks file by file you can use CMD Fastcopy+ to do that to a SDIEC. Your best bet though is a Zoomfloppy
with use of a real 1541 to copy either file by file OR to .d64 images. I know you don't want to use .d64 images but they will be your best bet
when it comes to copy protected disks. Also you can mount .d64 images on your sdiec. I use a hardware card called The Greaseweazle, I built a
Linux machine which has both a 3.5 and 5.25 floppy on it, I can copy
just about any disk ever created with it. It is being done via tracks
and sectors so copy protection isn't too bad. It creates Flux images or
in my case .d64, .adf, and .img images (C64,Amiga,PC) the only issue is flippy modified disks, unless you use a modified 5.25 floppy drive it
will not read the 2nd side of the disk. For that I use a Zoomfloppy and
a real 1541.
I guess I'd like to do BOTH .d64 and file/file; hey, does the
Greaseweasel support other than Amiga drives? I'm impressed by it for copying Amiga disks - but if it supports C= that would be an awesome thing. Your setup sounds perfect... maybe I'll just mail you some 250 disks?? :P
The Zoomfloppy looks like how I'll go - but I'll try your suggestions for copying to .d64s... thanks Bucko!
The Greaseweazle copies ANY disk, no matter the computer.. It makes Flux Images or SCP images or in the case of Amiga and C64 .adf and .d64.. THe zoomfloppy works great but you need a real 1541 to use for the disks.. That is the tough part if you have old ones like me,m I already lost one of my 2 because I left it on overnight after being off for 30plus
years.. Just a bad chip but I haven't gotten around to figuring out which...
Awesome; so this is the route I need to go, then... just grab a greaseweasel and have at it. :P Sweet - I thought it was an Amiga-only affair.
Then just to source a 5.25" drive solution for using it with.
Honestly it is the cheapest way to go, it will image any computers
disks.. I ended up picking up 2 5.25 floppies for $90 because I didn't want to spend more then $50 for 1, so I will eventually toss one on eBay to sell or Craigslist.. I am waiting because I am afraid when I start doing my 200+ disks the drive will go south..
Alright, alright - since Bucko always seems to know... I got a question for ya. I recently swapped a disk drive for a gotek - and all was good
in the world. Until I found an archive that ISN'T in .IMG format... its just the actual DOS files; in a /subdir... do you know how I can
*create* an .IMG from some /subdir?
I tried;
mksquashfs subdir/ image.img
But that didn't seem to w0rk... I used to just copy those files to a
disk, but can't w/ a Gotek. Hmmmm.
That's weird, I responded and it didn't save.. So here goes again!
You can create a .img file using a program called imgburn (google it to download it) that will create .img files from directories. I used it
back in the day when I was creating .img files of downloaded CD's, which
I wanted to create disks from. It worked pretty well.. Not sure how it will work with the Gotek though. If it doesn't like it try copying the files to a subdirectory on the PC and create from there..
Sorry for being vague..
Nah, yer awesome... mL sent me a reply, too, and heres how I've been
doing it;
$ dd if=/dev/zero of=floppy.img bs=1440k count=1
$ mkfs.msdos -F 12 floppy.img
$ mkdir disk
$ sudo mount -o loop floppy.img disk/
[Copy 1.44 worth of files to /disk...]
$ sudo umount disk/
However, in this particular instance it might be nice using some GUI proggie - so thanks for the suggestion. I'll hunt for IMGBURN or other software that might help...
I really wish the Goteks allowed you to mount larger .IMG or .ISO's and boot as CD-Rom - that would be killer.
Dude I was just looking at a Kaypro 2000 early 'laptop' - I haven't ever owned a Kaypro and am intrigued.
